ok, i recently changed my oil pan, since it had a crack where the drain bolt goes and it leaked pretty bad, so i bought a "new" used pan, and its in great condition, bought the gasket, installed it, and i had huge amounts of oil leaking out from where the pan goes attached to. so i take it off and think its a bad seal, bought sealant and put that on, and the damn leak is still there, and the leak is bad, especially when i drive, thats when the oil just pours out! i dont understand, the bolt are on nice and tight, the gasket its placed firmly...what the heck?? what else could be the problem??

Where does your oil return from the turbo go into? Is it leaking there somehow?

well, i drilled the hole for the return line exactly where it was on the old pan, the return hose has alway leaked, but it leaks very little. i've checked. but the real insane leaks are coming from the oil pan itself where it bolts on to the block. well, actually it leaks from one side only, not all around, but the leak is not noticable when idle. but whn i take it for a spin, and park it, the whole bottom of the car and all the parts underneath are drenched in oil.

Might not be the oilpan. Depending on where the leak is coming from, it could be a front main oil seal, oil filter adapter O-ring, crank angle sensor o-ring, oilpump-to-block o-ring, bedplate seal.. any number of things. Where exactly is the leak coming from? Which side, which area of that side, what's near it, above it? Pics help.

yep i agree^^^, somtimes you might think it's a oil pan gasket leak buy it can actually be dripping from above it. the best thing i do to detect leaks is clean off all the oil back there and underneath real well with brake cleaner so it can dry off quick. once your done, start the car and immediately look under there and look where it comes from.

i'll get pics up tomorrow to show you guys. well, what i dont understand, this leak didnt start til the day i replaced the oil pan, and i mean exactly on that day. when i started it up, leakage. so i just figured bad install. but the main oil leak is coming from the front of the oil pan (not the oil filter side)right where the dp is. another bad thing is, that the oil falls rigth on top of the DP and the DP burns the oil, and huge amounts of smoke come out. so its quite embarrasing when i drive it.

first thing tomorrow morning, ill get the pics up.

Maybe your "new" used oil pan got a ding in the lip where it bolts to the block (during shipping). So, it can't seal in one spot. Maybe you should remove it and examine its sealing surface. And examine the sealing surface on the block. There might be a blob of RTV stuck in the way. You put RTV on the joint between the oil pump and block, right?

ok, i did use some gasket maker on the oil pan the second time around, but decided not to use the new gasket itself, since i thought the sealant alone would be good enough. so, should i use the sealant with the gasket, and put it on top of it?

woh!! i tried taking off the pan again, and doesnt seem its gonna come off, that thing is stuck on tight as fuck from the sealant i used the second time, shit is stuck like a rock, doesnt even move. now what

FSM says to apply RTV on the bedplate where the oil pan meets the block. IE the front of the block, the passenger side in the area of the harmonic balancer/UDP. You will see a seam where the oil pump meets the block.

I'm sorry, but am I seeing this correctly...the whole drain block has shifted, and that doesn't worry you at all...? I think that is the source of your oil leak problem, and not the pan. When you drive it splashes on your DP, oil pan.....etc. Oh don't forget to replace the gasket there too. Mitsu sells them for around 1 dollar each. Compatable with 4g63 gaskets.

In the event it is your pan, as other's stated, you only need a thin bead of RTV at the seam where the oilpump meet the block. torque everying down to 8-9 lbs...I think...

One thing you always have to keep in mind about oil.. it flows down, and back. I'd say the majority of your oil is leaking from the turbo drain tube, moving down on the block, and back along the undercarriage. This is why i questioned whether you could confirm it was the pan - anything above it could be leaking, and anything in front of it could be leaking and you'd still have what looks like an oil pan leak.

Fix your return line, clean the engine bay and undercarriage, and i bet it'll all go away.

alright, well, put everything back on, I bought the other bolt that goes to the drain plug to seal it, however i have not gasket so i will need to buy one. cleaned all the oil up, turned on the car, and inspected for leaks, well, that oil drain IS the source of so much oil spill. its on tight, but htere is no gasket there, so it leaks out oil a lot. will go to mitsu and buy that gasket!

oh by the way, eclipsekaiser, you say its the drain gasket for the 4g63 that fits right in? could i just use some RTV on this instead or no? thanks all for the responses.

Actually RRE carry the gaskets as well. On the 4g63, it is the gasket used between drain tube and the oil pan. If not RTV should do it (according to ADMIN).

You can always remove the drain block and sand the edge of the drain to ensure flatness for good practice.

well, i went to mitsu picked up the 4g63 gasket, I didnt know i was suppose to get the bottom one, so i got the one that goes on top, it was a bit big, but i cut it, i put copper RTV on both sides, and sealed it nicely, i'm am absolutely leak free as of now!.

edit: oh, by the way, i saw the new EVO MR edition at the dealer...nice!
