#82853, "Rebuild complete...VERY SERIOUS PROBLEMS"
Nov-20-04 04:09 PM by davo345

I finished the rebuild. Started her up. Sounded great. Smoked white smoke. WHAT THE FUCK?

I emptied the oil, you could see through the shit there was so much coolant in it. I have no idea what I did wrong. I need some serious suggestions here. I torqued the head studs to 70 pounds, then 90, in the proper order.

Are there ANY other possibilities that could leak that much coolant into the oil?

Yup, another classic case of the 'ole headgasket on wrong. (Most likely) Have fun taking it all apart agian. If you pay attention when you put it on, there's only one way it will match up. At least that's how it was on my 97 when I did it a couple of weeks ago.

I really dont see how that could have happened. Since it only goes on 1 way, it was completly flat and fit in nicely.

Was there anything I should have placed on the head gasket, some sort of sealant or something? I know there was that blue stuff around each hole on the head gasket, and I thought that was sealant, but I could be wrong. Lemme know, thanks.

hehe, there is 2 ways to stick on a hg, one with the little oil drain hole in the right area. or one where its fliped the opposite direction. your gonna have to pull the head, and fix it.

With either way, it will sit flat? How can I know which is correct?

I've already pulled the cams, and am draining the coolant as we speak.

When you spray it with copper spray, ONE light coat is enough.

Check your block and head for cracks... but it's most likely just a backwards HG.

I dont understand...if i put it the opposite way than what I had it, The holes in the back of the block to not line up with the headgasket at all, and the tiny hole in the front does not line up either.

I think I had it correct.........?

What else could this be?

Not sure if this would do it or not but when you split your block in half to rebuild the bottom end, there is a little o-ring that is inbetween the bellhousing and the block. maybe if you didnt replace it or even put one in, i dont know, just something that comes to mind.

Also, could there be a flaw in my tightening sequence? I torqued all the head studs to 80 pounds in the correct order, then to 90 pounds in the correct order (inward to outward from the repair manual).

And i've been reading via search, and do the ARP head studs really need to have 2 washers instead of just the one? I got the studs for the neon from summit part # ARP-141-4202

god damn it.

did you replace or even put that oring back in thats inbetween the block and bell housing?

when i changed my headgasket the first time when mine blew out, i torqued the studs too much and strecthed one of the studs and it caused coolant to leak into the oil, maybe you did that.

I am not sure what o-ring you are talking about...

I torqued them down to 90...thats what everyone is telling has said to do.

what block?//// bellhousing??? the only seal in between those if the rear main. no orings. anyways. just try a new hg or something, make sure the holes line up for the oil drain, and torque everything down evenly. and i hope you got the head resurfaced to begin with.

if he checked for gaps and shit on his head, and there arent any warped spots, then he doesnt need to have it resurfaced. i have changed my HG 3 times and i have never had any head problems, lol.

about the o-ring, im not talking about the seals on the ends/sides of the block. i dont know if you call it a seal or not, but its an o-ring. i will take a pic of it tomorrow and post it here so you know what im talking about.

Oh that thing? That was common sense emoji. And no, that has NOTHING to do with coolant.

LOL

I remember I installed my HG in backwards during my rebuild. When I poured in the oil, I checked for leaks and then there was oil all over the floor dripping down the back of the block.

I was soooo pissed. I felt like the biggest retard in the world.

READ THIS THREAD! Covers all your questions:
http://forums.2gnt.com/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=23&topic_id=796&mesg_id=796&page=

What you need to do at this point is:
1) Read that thread ^^ in detail.
2) Buy new head studs or bolts, and a new headgasket
3) If you buy bolts, shave a couple threads off both the right-side bolts
4) Check the depths of each head bolt hole to make sure it's threaded deep enough. Do this by hand-tightening each bolts completely into the block BEFORE you put the head on. Measure the distance between the bottom of the bolthead and the top of the block. It should be at least 1/4" shorter than the head. Number the bolts with nail polish or paint pen before removing them and installing the head.
