#8252, "Whats all the noise under the hood ???"

First I want to say hello to everyone, I'm new to the forum and I think this is the best website anywhere for 2nd generation eclipse. I love the site and love reading and learning from your posts.

Here's my question. I have a 95 eclipse, I'm the original owner, always take car of basic maintenance and have never had a serious mechanical problem. I have 135K miles on the car and it's loud under the hood. It's not the belts, I think I might be the fan. I always thought the car was kinda loud (has never been as quiet as say a Lex) but now it sounds like there is something wrong.

Any suggestions
Thanks

This could be a lot of things. With that many miles on the car the things I would be worried about is the timing belt if it has not been changed and the head gasket if it hasn't been changed. Can you tell exactly where the sound is coming from?

Indeed.

Can you give us some more detail? What does the noise sound like?

Welcome to the club!

Thanks for all your help. The timing belt has been replaced twice, every 60,000 miles. I change the oil every 2,700-3,000 miles. I use synthetic blend.

The noise is an idling noise. The fan is very loud when it comes on. The noise I'm refering to is I guess the noise of the engine running, that combined with the fans coming on. It's so loud that it causes people to look at me and the car when walking by if I'm stopped at a light or stop sign. It's not a screeching sound like that of belts, its not a ding, its more like a loud idling Vrrrrrr and when the belts come on it sound like a have a blower under the hood. I don't have any mechanical mods or mechanical problems.
The only thing I can think of is that I had the radiator replaced.
Even so I think most of you would agree that at Idle our cars are louder than say a Lexus or BMW, why is that?

Hope that helps a little more.

Haha, I due tend to let people know about that allot. I just don't like to see that happen to anyone it sucks not having a car. If I would of got that head gasket fixed at the first sign of oil leaking I would of never spun a bearing, damn I always gotta be lazy. Naw it doesn't sound like a spun bearing, sounds something with the belts.

What's a spun bearing? I think I have an idea of what it is,so to reply to that along with basic maintenance I always check my spark plugs for gap and wear. There is no sign of oil or leak whatsoever around seal or spark plugs. Is there a way of quieting the fan?
What is a good brand of belts? I can replace those myself, but auto parts usually just have belts that are OEM, I've never heard of after-market belts.

Thanks

The spun bearing will come from low oil levels. Along your crank shaft where the piston rods connect there is a bearing there that allows the piston to move around the crank. When the bearing gets spun it has shaved off some of that bearing causing the piston to move around and create a knocking noise of some sort. Eventually the connecting rod will give way, then it's bye bye engine and off to the shop for a couple of weeks.

Atleast that is the explination that Satan gave me so if I am wrong somebody please correct me. emoji

Thats about right, the bearing gets worn and there is room for the rod to move around and it can fuck the crank up and if it gets really bad, start knocking on the block and even blow through the side of the block.
