#82153, "bought 1st DSM, have problems, need help!"

Hey...
I just got my 1st Mitsu. A '95 eclipse GSX 5spd

I love the car but have a few concerns. 1st and most serious, IMO, is the oil pressure. at idle it keeps dropping til the idiot light comes on and the factory oil pressure gauge reads all the way down to "Low"
once I touch the throttle, the pressure starts to rise.
Driving spiritedly, the oil pressure appears fine.
any diagnosis?

also the car is consuming coolant somewhere???

I loose about 1.5 quarts from a full recovery tank on a 35 mile romp. the temp gauge moves sporadically from just a touch below the middle to about 3/4 way "Hot"

any help, opinions, or advice would be tremendously appreciated!

I suppose I should add that the car has 113k on the clock, appears to be in "good/average" condition, and I live and drive in high altitude Mtn. conditions (8-12,000 ft, -live at 10152' )

check out the 1g/4g63 section bro. All of these topics are for 420a motors only.

As for the coolant, possibly a headgasket, could be any number of things. Is there a leak on the bottom end you can see? White smoke from the exhaust? Need more info.

As for oil pressure, best way to see what the ACTUAL oil pressure is, is to hook up a separate oil pressure tester to see if the gauge is at fault of if in fact you do have dangerously low oil pressure at idle.

something like this:
http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/pro_det.asp?P65=&tool=all&item_ID=16402&group_ID=1550&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog

If you confirm the low oil pressure, it may be time for a new oil pump, maybe you have excessive bearing clearances causing too much oil to be lost before it hits the sending unit. I.E. rebuild time. Find a good machine shop =]

Good luck.

my girlfriends gs-t's oil pressure guage does that too. when im sitting at a light it goes all the way down, but when im driving normal its right in the middle. im not losing oil anywhere, so i think its normal.

But like ^^^^ said, this is for the 2gnt's
