Ok looking for some suggestions and or feedback. Need real info.
I have a 96 Eclipse RS which I presently have a turbo kit on as we speak. As it looks I guess I blew the head gasket so I had the head gone through and basically refreshed. Now that I have the motor apart Im thinking I should go ahead and rebuild the motor. I have a few ideas on what to do. So Im curious on what others have done. My goal is to have a powerful N/A motor and even more on boost of N2O. But I want alot more power on the N/A side than stock.
Im looking at getting the Long rod kit from Howell along with 10.5:1 pistons and using the Crane 14 cams and still use the turbo setup. But Im thinking I will run into detonation problems and I will need to run too high of octane fuel to be a daily driver. I know most people do the lower compression pistons and thats what is recommended so no need to go there. Im just thinking the higher compression pistons on the N/A side will deliver great launching torque and good power along with spooling the turbo quicker. But I will only be running 5lbs of boost normal driving and maybe 7 to 10 racing. All of this is with a worked 14b, 255 Walbro, and the other basic goodies. Although now I have been thinking about running the same long rod kit but upping the cams to the Crane 16's and using a 100 shot of N20 from Nitrous Express (wet shot kit) instead of the turbo setup. This way I can run 92+ octane fuel (pump gas) instead of racing fuel. Still good N/A power but Hp only when I need it. Looking for some input on these ideas and what Im wanting to achieve. Id really like to hear from someone that has built a similar N/A 420A and used the same kit and what gains they received on or off the bottle or boost.

I think that it's pointless to try and have "more power on the N/A side". Get the low compression pistons. With the higher compression piston's you really have to pay more attention to tuning. A car equipped with lower compression is more forgiving on the tuning side.
Why build the engine if you are only going to run 10psi. Seems kinda pointless there also.
IMO, build it with 8.x:1 compression pistons and boost as much as you want. Then add NO2 when you want via good tuning.

What sort of set up do you have for fuel mods on your ride? I see your boosting 14lbs with what turbo and also what injectors are you using and what type of fuel management?

Metaljim is running 10:5:1 pistons and is setting up for turbo soon. I think a Megasquirt or 8 injector setup would prolly work well in helping to tune it.

My setup is Howell 2.2L stroker 8.6:1 compression, S16G, cams etc. The 14psi that you read in my sig was done with just a SFMU and 415cc injectors. I now have the 8 injector setup, but the car is already stored for the winter.

I would'nt even bother with the high compression just because of the physics of it
Less Space= Less Air To Burn ...... More Space= More Air For My Boost!
I really doubt you could make up that much power in the higher compression with our motors then just going all out with a great turbo setup. Me personally I would'nt mess with it. Tho because it requires alot of knowledge and tunning I have respect for everyone who has gone outside the box. Good luck to you tho. What little knowledge I have I hope it helps some by just putting it simply

Low compression pistons are MUCH safer for high boost levels....trust me. i had 10.5:1 for a while, and it doesnt work out very come tuneing time. if you wanna stick with around the 10-12psi range, then that would probably be ok. anymore, and be ready to shell out for 104 0ctane everyday. as far as the "all-motor" modding is concerned...dont bother, unless you just wanna be different, and spend WAY more money to be a LOT slower than a turbo car.
