Ok, so I have my block back from being bored n cleaned...and last night i installed my pistons. According to my roomie...the 2nd compression ring (from JE) should be installed w/ the tapered edge facing down. However, in their "overly descriptive instructions/picture" i'm getting the feeling that it should aim up. Anyone installed these and know for sure which way to put them? I'd hate to have a blown built motor before i get to turbo it!!!

There's a dot on the ring. The dot always faces up.

That's why i believed my room-mate...cuz the dot was on top...and i always thought the same thing....not to mention he designs pistons for a living. But then he called me on his way to detroit today for a business meeting that he has tomorrow, saying he thinks he may have been wrong. So i go back an look at the piston ring install pic's...look at this...

So the dot was on the opposite side of the tapered edge for my second compression ring...the first compression ring had nothing. But...from the picture, it looked like the tapered edge aimed up...which would be on the opposite side as the dot???? Are you as confused as i am?!??!? Anyone who has encountered this...or Dino, if you know...please let me know. I reinstalled them tonight w/ the tapered edge up....and installed my oil pump....but that's still an "easy fix" to flip them over again...hell, at this rate i'll be a pro at 'ringing' pistons and installing them!! Just wanna do it right...that's for sure!!

I'm not confused at all. The top ring isn't orrientation specific, it can go in either way. The middle ring always goes in with the dot facing towards the top of the piston.

"Install all rings with mark facing towards the top of the piston."

"Unidentified rings may be installed with either side up."

"Install all UNMARKED beveled rings with bevel toward the top of the piston"

If i remember correctly, the 420A JE rings don't have any interior bevel, so that doesn't apply. it has beena while since i've seen them, however, so check them for a beveled edge on the inside of the ring first to verify.

Dino....Thanks alot man...I didn't find that PDF file on their website...but that is exactly what i needed to figure things out. The pistons are in now....just waiting for my head to get here so i can continue with the build-up. I have to finish up this week...i knew my engine didn't have much life left in it...and today, she finally choked on me. I think my timing belt shit on me or something. It was losing power as the day went on, and about 10 blocks from home, it started sounding like the valves were hitting the pistons or something. Whatever it was, it wasn't good, that's all i know. So now it is time to try and make it the next few days riding my bike...i just hope this rain stops...it'll be bad enough being cold!!!

yeah...now you know why i was so excited to get everything VERY fast...instead of waiting for Howell to get it to me in 3-6 weeks...those bastards!! Thanks again for driving that stuff out here. By the way...i had told you i was just gonna use the head off my block, but i ended up buying a new one cuz i got a pretty good deal on it. So by the time this is done, i should have basically all new stuff under the hood...then time to save up for that turbo kit man!! It's gonna KILL me having a motor built for power but not giving it to her!! I'll keep ya'll posted on how it goes...and prolly be hittin ya up w/ more questions.
