ok guys.. well I have a stinky 4spd auto on my rs.. really want a 5spd swap.. i heard 1500 was the usuall cost.. my club is about to be sponsered by a tranny shop big time.. we just have to do some good stuff first... im trying to work it.. in good with this guy so that he would hook me up.. anyone know the usualy cost at a junk yard for one or a new one..

what do you think the cost would be

if i did it myself or had someone do it with me for free

or just to pay some place to do it

and any thoughts .. any one done one before?? trying to be fast in my auto is hard.. i feel the 5spd would be the better mod if i wanted to be faster..

at the track (1/8) my boy runs 10.4 in a GS with just ICE MAN cia and chrome 17s..

i ran 11.7.. with just exhaust and ice man Cia.. i then had chrome 17s.. yea i know

now i had added a 4-1 header and alloy 18s.. so i figure prob same time

but his is 5spd so i figure that would be a good investment

just wanted to see if you guys had the same costs i got from others..

for some reason this board seems to be alot more helpful then say dsmtalk and speedoptions. they just talk trash on SO and give bad advice sometimes...

its all then damn turbo guys haha

I love dino and 2gnt. ####ers (my word) bliz stole it but i let him borrow it

well, headers only help with the high rpms i think, especially the 4 to 1 designed ones. and your auto wont let u get into that range.

do a search on this "transmission"
and clik the archives, and you'll get a bunch of shit on it.

peeps say its about 2 grand total for all the BS that arises. might be less if you can do it your self. the hardest part is customizing the pedal and interior things.

yea im kinda new to this forumm.. still working it out.. im at work thought id just ask.. since some may not have the same ideas as mine.. and vegas i know the 4-1 is all top end.. but with no low end anyhow the top end is worth the loss.. but i noticed a lil bit of difference.. wanted a 4 2 1 but they sent 4-1 so i read up some more and many told me to stick with it..

I talked to a guy with a 96 RS who actually did the swap. A friend of mine is well aquainted with the owners of the shop that did it. It was a nightmare, from what both parties say. Car would stall for no reason, couldn't get the speedo or tach to work, constant CEL, sometimes not even start, no reverse lights, bunch of BS. The guy ended up tearing it all out, putting the auto back in, and selling the car.

Call Carboy in Houston and ask them about Tri Nguyen's (Tree When)auto to manual swap on his Eclipse RS. They'll tell you all about it, i'm sure (as well as tell you they'll never f'n do it again)

drive the car hard a while and it will shift more positive and everything. Drive it hard once a day or more for a week or two. My car being auto, will chirp the tires hitting 3rd gear at about 70-72 MPH.

I wanna know how you get it to chirp.

Why dont you turbo your car for that much money. It would be a lot more fun than driving a manual eclipse with no turbo.

Mick (grneclipse) was talking about how much fun the t25 was on his auto just because it will be at full boost around 2100 rpms. The low rpms would greatly benefit although the t25 isnt the best top end turbo out there.

I say go for it, despite Dino's negativity. Not going to be cheap but I would think it would be worth it. Especially if you get free labor.

I wouldn't really call what Dino said negativity. I was the one asking carboy about it and trying to talk them into doing it again but they wouldn't have any of it. Took too many man hours for a car they don't normally work on. We did later find out that the no speedo/tach was probably due to the speed sensor being bad. They still had problems with the car acting wierd and stalling for no apparent reason as well as a constant CEL (probably needed a MT ecu). But if you can find someone to do I would say give it a shot. There's a night and day difference. Oh BTW, if you don't know how to drive a manual ... learn BEFORE you do the swap.
