#81259, "Bunch of HP questions"

Hey guys, I'm pretty new to these forums and DSM tuning so you'll probably have to bear with me. I've done several searches on the site and can't really find the answers to most of these questions. With that being said, I've got a completely stock 95 Eclipse. Just finished getting it repainted and now I'm ready to do a little engine work. I'm gonna order a exhaust system in a week or two from megan racing. I think it's a 2.5" catback system. I guess my question is what is the cheapest way to get the most horsepower out of my car? I've been looking at turbo systems, but at this point I don't have near enough money for one. I've got around 700 dollars at my expense right now, so what bolt on applications can I do right now to see the best HP gains? Over the next 6 months I'd like to keep adding things and get my car up to around 200 HP. I've been also looking at possibly putting a 50 shot NOS system in. I guess I just need you guys help on setting up a plan of things to buy over the next 6 months to 1 year and see some real performance gains. Keep in mind I'm a college student and I don't see a whole lot of money. Thanks in advance and I hope you guys can come up with something good for me.

JD

Buy the decent catback exhaust. If your state doesn't have any emissions then just remove your cat and gut it out or replace it with a test-pipe. Buy a cheap short ram intake off of ebay. Then get the nitrous kit. That car will take a 75 shot all day long reliably as long as your engine isn't already messed up. Further than that... Take of your intake manifold/throttle body/exhaust manifold and take a die grinder and port them all out to open them up some.

You could not of searched very hard... But anyways. Your not going to get that kind of performance out of a exhaust and intake. Save your money for turbo. Do a search on peicing together your own turbo kit. You can find a cheap turbo at a junk yard, I picked one up for $75. (needed rebuilt) Get a manifold for $300ish. which if you say you have 700 then that leaves you with 300ish to spend on odds and ends, fitting, fuel needs, blah blah blah... Start hitting up people for free parts -- I always buy stuff and deicde not to use it, so I just hand things out to my friends.

If I knew how to piece together a custom system and put one on my car I wouldn't be asking for your guys help. And I know a CAI and new exhaust isn't gonna get me to 200 HP but it's a start. I'm just needing your help putting together a game plan of things to buy over the next 6 months. Thanks again..

Haha, thanks DarkOne. Just stating the obvious. But anyways, djtricktree, I've seen that link and checked out all the stuff on that page, but that seems like I would be sinking 2-3K in my car for around 30 HP TOPS. It seems the solution to my problem is either turbo or NOS, correct? Oh yeah, DarkOne, were those parts you listed suggestions for me to go ahead and start getting or what?? I've already got a 2.5" cat-back exhaust on the way and gonna order a CAI later this week. Would a Walbro fuel pump and new injectors be a good investment or should those wait until I get a turbo or NOS system in sometime in the very far future. Thanks for all the help, guys, and keep the replies coming.

Yes. you are absolutely correct. Its a lot of money for not a lot of gain. Nitrous can be fun, I ran it for about a year. But its not the same as a turbo. If you want power there is really only 1 way to get it. Save up and boost it! even running 6-8 psi on a stock bottom will get you more gains than all those n/a mods will.

So would a 50 shot NX NOS kit for around 300 bucks be pretty sufficient for the horsepower gain until I can save enough for a turbo kit? Cause it would take until like the end of next summer for me to save enough to buy a turbo kit. Man it sucks being a poor college kid. haha..

Depends on how much you plan to use it. I had a 75 shot but it a computer controlled system so it was a gradual injection. Dont forget the more you use it the more it costs since filling the tank each time is like 40 around here. that adds up fast when you are squeezing a lot. nitrous was fun, it just isnt the same thing though.

Sure.

I think there is one for sale in the Sale/Wanted section for $300.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but can't you set up a NOS system to only engage when you "stomp" the accelerator. I might be wrong about that but I would figure you could. I mean I wouldn't drive around all the time using NOS as much as possible, but it seems it would be fun to have if you wanted to get on it every now and then. Anyways, let me know if this is possible and if any extra parts are needed for this setup. Thanks..
