Im thinking you should search the forums first. You can find a plethora of knowledge by only reading the "Things We've Seen Before" section at the top of the page. Do this and hope that no one decides to BANME!ify you. To answer your question, my first mod was an intake.

LOL i forgot that ^^^ word was banned.

well, if money isn't a problem...you can do f*cking wonders with the car!

things you should consider while doing rebuild:

do i want turbo (this should the most important, and hopefully the answer is yes emoji )

if yes, then what to rebuild with. most common is +.02 JE pistons, either 8.8:1 or 8.6:1 compression. with Eagle rods.

and you can either build your own turbo kit or get a Star kit or a Hahn kit. at this point, Hahn looks like the best overall turbo kit out there.(this is just my opinion).

BUT there is MUCH to research before going into turbo's. so maybe now just rebuild with the above and turbo when you have all the knowledge needed.

things to start you off with i guess. but the search on this site will also do wonders for you.

Atleast you picked the right place to come to.

The first thing to do is a basic tune-up...make sure everything is working right.

Then, do the freemods... This first thing I did with my 98 GS was I took off the factory airbox and cut away almost the whole backside with a rotory tool (Dremel).

This helps... sounds just like a short ram intake. Then I replaced it with a aftermarket cone intake on my stock pipe.

Next is the exhuast... if you want to keep the car N/A, then get a nice cat-back exhaust with a hi-flow cat. Then a set of aftermarket headders.

Those are the basics for a N/A car....

If you want turbo...

Don't do anything until you get about $3,000 for the turbo kit.

After that, its nice to have an extra $3,000 in the bank for a built motor with aftermarket internals after you blow the engine you have now. (if you decide 8psi just isnt enough)

The 420a comes with 140hp at the crank from factory, and can only handle about (so I herd) 270hp before you put a hole in the block.

And I know you are going to ask this question....

Yes, you can swap your 420a motor for the 4g63T motor from a GST

BUT ITS NOT WORTH IT.

<--This is our god... god decides our fate. We shall not upset our god. God can and will ruin our lives if we were to upset him.

If you absolutely HAVE to rebuild the motor already then do not pass up the opportunity to put some forged pistons and some nice rods in the thing. If you decide to turbo it down the road you'll be able to turn the boost up WAY more than you could with the stock pistons/rods.

Also, if you do intend to boost later - definately read through the turbo forum about choosing a compression ratio for the pistons.
