so the t-belt broke? I would suspect some bent or broken valves.

Why did you buy a car that had the timing belt snap? It's not one of those scenarios where you can just buy a new timing belt, slap it on, align the cam gears, and go... well, whatever your reasons, good luck with the project.

We have the head all put back together but just need to set the timing. How to make sure that its in time on the compression stroke and not 180 degrees out. Thanks,

This one time I went to Autozone and asked the same question. I'd give you the same look of "Jesus H Christ, who on God's green earth gave YOU a wrench?!" but all I got is the face. I then went into the ricer aisle and he beaned me from across the store with the Mitsubishi Eclipse Chilton's manual. Go figure.

seting the time is easy make sure the came gear marks are facing each other. Make sure the crank pully mark is stright with the mark on the block. put the belt on and make sure the tensioner doesnt fuck up the markings and all set. After all is said and done you should have TDC for the Number 1 cylinder.
