Hi everyone, im doing a timing belt for a freind. I got everything the only thing is this. on the vfaq and the service manual they dont tell you where the key ways go on the cams. I set them at 12 o clock and got everything aligned, but when you put the t-belt on it shifts almost 1/2 a tooth. Do the key ways have to be at 6 or what? also, how tight should i make the autotentioner against the bracket, i have it very tight, so tight that the autotentioner doesnt release when parked. im used to doing a 4g63. help a brother out

The key marks on the cams should be facing in towards each other. The intake mani cam should be at 3 and the exhuast mani cam should be at 9. I always set them about 1/2 apart (even though you're supposed to line them up) so that when I release the tensioner it pulls them together the 1/2 tooth difference. Also, you have to move crank pulley a 1/2 tooth off of TDC - it's all described for you in the Chilton's service manual - I'd tell you what page, but the manual is down in the shop .. you'll find it. Make sure you crank the engine over several times manually to see if they stay consistently on TDC. I've noticied sometime it takes until the 2 time around to see that they are off. Good luck. Hope it helps. More questions e/m me.
