I've found a few posts in my searching that pertain to what is going on with my '95 Eclipse GS. They confirm my suspicions but I'd really like to run this by you and then confirm what is put in these posts here (man there are a lot of hits for "check engine light won't turn on" ! ):
My problem is exactly what is described in those posts. No Engine Light at all when I turn ignition on... will still crank starter tho... past 6 months or so of car dieing while driving or idling but starting right back up, etc.. etc.. So I'm convinced it is the PCM. Sound right? Some folks offer other ideas in the posts above.
So... I just wanted to clarify that A: this is the PCM causing me problems and B: the first post answer about cross-referenced PCMs. Which chrysler/dodge pcm is the same as mine for $500 less? =)

Having Problems? Heres my Three step solution to anything 2gnt related. Step 1: Put down everything in your hands. Step 2: Grab a lucky strike, Smoke it. Step 3: Walk to the fridge, double fist some keystone ice, sit down in the shade, drink one beer, finish cigarette, drink other beer, roll a joint, smoke it, walk back to your problem, and in about 5 minutes the solution will come to you. No, light works sometimes, and when the light comes on, the car will start and run fine... until it dies, then all things work except the check engine light and it won't start again... until the light comes back on.

Hrmm, Seems like alot of people are having ecu related problems. I had the same stuff happening with my car. Mine ended up being the pcm. i paid 225 for a refurb from chrysler. I could have bought a brand new one from some mitsu place for 4-600, i cant remember for sure. Gabe

Two more quickies that I can't seem to track down in the forums here.
1. ECU vs. PCM ... are these two different things or are they the same?
2. This seems to be a very common issue with the PCM dieing in these 95 ecus (many folks here have had this happen), same scenario as I have, which tells me that someone must have a fix for this other than just replacing the PCM... right? Like a cap that died or something I can replace in the PCM itself instead of the whole thing? Any thoughts on this?
I'm going to remove the PCM (the one under my hood near my battery) and pop the top to see if I can see any physical flaws that I can fix before I spring for a new PCM. I'll post my finds.
And btw, I've been trying to find questions and such I can field to 'give back' to the boards... but man you people are fast and -way- more schooled in these DSM monsters than I am

I count three, maybe 5 in all my years hear. It isn't THAT common, but may become moreso as these cars get older.

The ECU is sealed in potting material for heat distribution and weathr resistance, because it is outside of the passenger cabin exposed to the elements. You can't get at the board without the painful and difficult process of removing that epoxy material. Basically, you can't fix it if it is broken, so you should just replace it.
