#78967, "Doing timimg and MLS HG at a shop. Q's and should I get a crankscraper"

Sorry for the long title. I am going to put my car in the shop and paying more than 1k to replace the timing belt and related maintenance (tensioner, water pump etc.) also getting the HG replaced with a flepro MLS HG because I have the infamous leak on the drivers side corner. can a crankscraper be put in during the related labor? Should one be put in, seems relatively cheap is why I ask. I only have baby mods (useless ones I think, a CAI and evo catback)
Does anybody have anything I can use so the shop doesnt overcharge me for parts??
What brands of stuff do you suggest??

Sounds to me like they are overcharging you for everything. Crankscrapers are nice I'd put one in but its not really related to the work being done. They will have to pull the oil pan for that so you might wanna wait, guess its up to you on how much you wanna spend.

You could do it yourself. It's really not that hard.

Why don't you take the grand your gonna drop on it and do it yourself? If tools are a problem, it wont cost you but a few hundred in parts to do all that you want done, take the other $$ and buy the tools and you will have them for future work. If it's a time issue... drive another car and do it in spare time? You could rent a car for a few weeks with some of the extra money even, heh...

With just labor , I found a shop in Ny that would do the entire job for $300 - $400.

Same here. Back when I didnt know what I was doing, I only got charged like 400 bucks to do everything, and this was a high end shop.
As for the crankscraper, if you taking opinions, dont waste your time. I just finished rebuilding my motor and during that time I really did some studying up and asking around about these. Found out they dont do jack for 4 cyl., great for V8's though!!

Good luck
DJ

I love these posts. The HG is NOT hard to do. Fuck you can rebuild the entire engine in about 2 days with a jack, two jack stands, and about 200$ in tools, you can get almost all the tools you need from wal-mart (use stanley only, cheapo ones will break for sure)! The chiltons manual is really good on this sort of thing. Shit I think my GF could do a rebuild with it, and she is a salon stylist.

So lets tally up some $$ figures
HG=48$
Tools=200-250$
Re-ring kit(includes berings/rings)=200$
Timing Belt=45$
Tensionser=30$
Gaskets=85$
Oil/filter etc sealers and what not=65$

total for you to REBUILD engine without pulling the block from the car=723$
Granted this is if you do not have to bore out your engine and re-use your stock pistons and rods.

OR
You could pay someone 1500$ to just change your head gasket and put a crankscraper in.
Wow
you just lost 777$

Sorry I'm being an ass, but I was you 5 years ago. I just hate to see people lose money so easily.
