what is the purpose of this?! (the small cover thingy on the right)

i'm starting my clutch job in like 10 mins and wanted someone to let me know what this is, if it's needed, what its purpose is etc...

i couldn't really find any great threads for a clutch install, just real vague, short pieces-parts. anyone know of a good write up?

i am also very aware that i posted this in the wrong forum. i know that this a manual tranny material, but i need answers semi quick since i'm going to start my clutch job after i'm done typing. thanks for any and all replies!! emoji

That's just a cover that comes with new clutches. Throw it out, doesn't mean anything. If you left it on you would be able to slide the splines on the axles into the clutch.

BTW - what clutch is that? I assume you're aware that is a Luk flywheel. It looks like it's a modular unit as well ... I can just barely see the clutch disk springs in the one picture. Were on earth did you find a modular Luk clutch? They're supposedly hard to find.

I have had two modular LuK clutches in my car. Make sure you follow break-in! Perhaps you could do a write up on a clutch install now, since no one has yet? If I get bored I might do it. I'm not too good at dumbing stuff down though. I tend to oversimplify things. I told a guy in 50 words or less everything he needed to do to pull his engine over AIM one day.

Lets just say this... I'm over 100whp and soon to cross 200whp. Thanx 2GNT! Now if I could only learn to prove it.
