Just looking for a ballpark figure from either guys that work in shops or have had a shop put it in for them...I'm looking at the Howell bottom end kit...just the regular build, how much would a shop charge to put that bad boy in for me? I'd do it my self..but have a few problems with it...no access to all the tools needed, and my apartments have a clause in the lease that you can't work on your cars (I do anyways, over the weekends, as long as it is put semi-back together by Mon.).
But any help is appreciated!

I have no idea on how much a shop would charge you for an engine removal, rebuild, and installation. Just to give you a ballpark figure on machine work though, you are looking anywhere from $250 to $500. You might get a better deal getting a shortblock from VT, and dropping your car off at the shop with the new motor.

That's another problem for me...no $$$!!! I'm a poor SrA in the AF!!! I'd love to just drop the cash for a brand new 2.2 or even 2.4 (if I had it), but here comes reality! Maybe there's a way to rebuild the bottom by keeping it in the car...it'd be a pain, but that may be my best bet right now...just need to get it running again...
...riding my bike 6.5 miles (13 total) to work each day, in the 100*F+ weather, with the wind in my face, and a backpack that weighs about 15 lbs...it's mad torture!!! But I am getting to be pretty fit!!! Only takes me 30-45 min. now to get there!!! And waking up at 5:30 a.m. and getting home at 6:00 p.m. sucks too!!!

Where is this? Are you in SoCal? And if you're in the AF, don't they have a "Hobby Shop" place where you can rent space to work on the car and use their tools? I got to check out the place where turbo8u does his work on Pendelton. Pretty pimp set up imo.
Another idea might be to look into if there are any local 2GNTers in your area that have tools and some time to help you. 3 guys who know what they're doing can get a swap done in a weekend imo. Especially a 3 day weekend. Don't give up hope!

I always tell people til you buy all the parts (pistons, rods, rings, etc) and pay to have them installed properly and pay for the things you didn't expect to go wrong you're looking at around 3 grand. Other people can disagree with me, but IMO that is a realistic number.
