#78750, "What's the difference between 97-98 ECU's"

I have a 98 GS MTX and I was going to install a 97 MTX ECU. When I took the black cover off the 98 ECU the internals looked alot different than the 97. Can I still run this on my car?

Probably not. Install it, start it. Does it idle? Does it drive? CEL on? No? Then its good.

Only diff between the 97 and 98 (as far as wiring)is the placement of one of the wires going to the coil pack. Unless you modify the harness connectors it will not work.
Also the connectors are slightly different.

95 ecu works with 95 only.
96 ecu works with 96 only
97 ecu works with 96 only
98 and 99 ecus work with 98's and 99's

I have a check engine light anyway from my EGR block off and test pipe.

Also how can I tell if my ECU is bad? Is there atest or something that I can run on it?

97's work with 96's? Does that mean i could go out and buy the af/x race computer, since they advertise their ECU's only work for 97s?

Sorry, typo.
No the 97 afx computer will not work... but it's possible that you can rewire the harness connector... there should only be one pin different... but I have not confirmed that yet.
