I hear a squeaking coming from the belt to the right of the timing belt. Anything to worry about? Could the belt be going bad? bearings? Also , my car has 87k on it, how could i tell if the timing belt has ever been changed, how much work is it to change a timing belt; difficult job, or just time consuming??

thanx alot
brian

Hey i just did my timimg belt dood! Well it aint easy, but if you are good with tools and have some mechanical ability, i'd say go for it. My local dealer said about 400 bucks to do, and thats just the belt change. They recomend to change out pulleys also and water pump, and oil seals. I wrote up a how-to that the admin has now and is getting ready to post on here, so keep a look out. As for the squeaking, it could be your belts or a bearing. My idler pulley was going bad and starting to chirp when the motor was cold, got a new one and its gone. Be sure your belts are new and in good condition and tight(1/2 belt deflection on greatest distance between pulleys). Your timing belt is rec for change at every 60k. I just did mine at 58k, and was in very good shape, but to check there is a cover with a bolt right on the front top of the timing cover. Take it off and look at the belt for cracks ect.. Hope this helps, and if you want a copy of my how-to, i can email it to you. It has parts needed list and all the steps.

I assume you are talking about a Talon AWD by your name.
I would sugest watching the pulley's while the car is running and look for wobble on all of them. The crank pulley likes to separate (2g's) and that may be where your noise is coming from (look for wobble) Otherwise it may just need new pulleys and/or belts.

You can't really tell if the timing belt has ever been changed by looking at it, unless the person you bought it from did it and told you. Always ask.
Best bet if you don't know and you are at 60,000 or above I would have it done to be safe. Timing belts on the turbo engine are both somewhat difficult and time consuming, if you don't know how, best you have someone do it that does. Also make sure you change the water pump and tensioners along with the timing belt.

opps my bad! didn't notice the "tsi" right away! Unfortunately, yous gots the mitsu motor, and its a totally different motor, but the same applies to yours. Change the timing belt to be sure, don't want any engine damage if it breaks!!!

So does the how-to apply to the turbo motor or no? if it doesnt, is there a how-to anywhere that does?. I don't have too much experience, but i could get some help, and I really dont feel like spending $400 on labor. Im going to try the dealer tomorrow, see if they know anything about the previous maintenance or maybe the phone number of the previous owner or something.
