#78360, "Why the hell am I 0.8 seconds slower after modding? WTF! HELP!"
Aug-01-04 06:20 AM by JWoodley

Guys, I'm stumped. Last nite my best time was 10.832 @ 65.82. This is almost ONE SECOND slower than what I ran with a CAI, header, and downpipe (10.1 @ 72). My current mods are: AEMv2, MP 60mm TB, Screamin' Demon Coil, Crane Firewire 8.5mm wires, one range hotter plugs gapped at .055, GReddy header/downpipe, testpipe, GReddy EVO catback, AF/X UDP

I'm baffled. All my RTs were under .500. My 60fts sucked until I started launching. I held the rpms steady at 3 grand and tried dumping, but that wasnt very effective. So then I tried riding the clutch. This worked nicely as I was able to hold the rpms at 4 grand all the way past the 60ft mark (best of 2.43 60ft, still weak, I know). I was really hoping to run in the high 9s, but I stayed in the high 10s all night.

Guys, right now my car is slower in the 1/8 than it was stock. I was shifting with a broken foot, but I'm pretty sure thats not my biggest problem. I'm gonna be out of town from late tonite until next SAT for school, if in any way possible, can you guys compile a list of things that are/could be wrong? I'm completely disgusted with the GS at this point. I've purchased a ZEX kit from a board member but I'm afraid to spray before I know what's going on.

Please help guys. I guess its time for the 103k maintenence. emoji

Yo Joseph!

It looks to me like you lost all your time in the 60' above. If you still have your cast on I can understand why. Also, which tires/wheels were you using?

around 70-75 degrees. this was at midnight madness, 10pm-2am.

I guess when I get back home I'm gonna:
-put the stock catalytic converter back on
-go back to the stock heatrange plugs @ OEM gap
-change fuel filter
-change the oil and install my crankscraper

Before all that, I guess I'll hookup my A/F gauge and see whats going on there. (Actually, I may hookup a volt meter to my 02 to see if my A/Fs are good.) I'm gonna be spraying soon, so I'm unsure if I should ditch my testpipe yet. Any other ideas?

Well an af/x ecu and a zex 75 shot should help soon. I'm hoping I'll get the boot off in about 3 weeks.

then theres no point in getting the afx IMO. The afx makes some power by advancing timing. If you get an msd to retard it, then whats the point?

get a nice pair of cams (raise powerband), lifters & rockers to hold higher revs and you afx unit eliminates revlimit which would help if you increase your powerband.....Damn i wish i could get one, but i cant so oh well, life moves on...

If you are really curious why you are slower, it's because of the 60mm TB. Its just too big for not having something to let the engine breathe better like cams. You will probably notice that your peak HP number is better but you're suffering everywhere else in the RPM range. I all honestly a 60mm TB is too large for most naturally apirated 2.0Ls ... if you had a turbo or were running some wicked camsit'd be a different story.

Some trees are .400 trees, some are .000 trees, some are .500 trees. It depends on the track.

Lets just say this... I'm over 100whp and soon to cross 200whp. Thanx 2GNT! Now if I could only learn to prove it.

I dont think a 75 shot with an AF/X will be too bad. The Neon guys do it all the time.

Agreed, also the test pipe may not give enough back pressure for your low end, and thats where it sounds like your problem is. Id be willing to bet with the cat on, a smaller TB and that AF/X ECU you'll launch a whole lot quicker and get a trap speed of 75mph or so. Also heed Chamukos warning, any Nitrous seller will tell you NOT to run nitrous with a chip that advances timing. If this is what the AF/X ECU does then you could be in danger of detonation. Try it without the nitrous and tell us how it goes.

I'll be starting with a 35 shot, then progressively working my way to 75. I'll be sure to get runs on and off the spray and with the ecu and without. I'll get some times up.

If you don't have access to a logger, I can come down and we can see what happens as you add nitrous so you can stay in a nice safe range, and still make power.
