#78141, "8inj system, LSD, tranny, clutch/flywheel (long post, pics) NEED HELP!!!"

I went down to Alabama this weekend to work on my car in my friends garage. We got quite a bit done in a short amount of time. I've run into a problem now though, the engine seems to be seized. The only thing I can think of is that the flywheel is hitting something. The transmission turns fine. I put on a Neon tranny, AMI LSD, Fidanza flywheel, spec stg 3 clutch and PP. If the car is in neutral, the transmission turns fine. If it is in gear and the clutch is depressed, it turns fine also, and you can hear the clutch turning between the flywheel and PP, like barely making contact as it turns. The engine will not turn at all, even with the clutch pedal pressed all the way in. I put the flywheel directly on the crank, and put a metal ring on the outside of it that was on the flexplate. Then I used the flexplate bolts to bolt it to the crank. Is this correct? The only thing I can think of is that the flywheel or pressure plate is hitting something or stuck on something causing the engine not to turn. Give me some ideas, I think I am going to drop the tranny again this weekend.

Lets just say this... I'm over 100whp and soon to cross 200whp. Thanx 2GNT! Now if I could only learn to prove it.

Flexplate bolts are too short to bolt a flywheel down. You need the bolts for the nonmodular flywheel.

The spacer you put on should be thrown away. That's what is likely causing the clutch drag.

So the flywheel bolts directly to the crank, with nothing on either side of it except for the heads of the bolts? I'm dropping the tranny this weekend to see what I can find out. Thanks for the help.

You have the throw-out bearing and all that stuff installed correctly. It's a little hard to mess up, but hey ....

As far as I knew everything was installed correctly. Obviously the wrong bolts are holding the flywheel to the crank, and I don't need that ring. I don't see how that alone would keep the engine from turning though. My only guess is that either the flywheel or pressure plate is stuck on something. The engine was running fine before I put them on, now it won't turn at all. I removed the plugs, removed the starter, removed the accessory belts, and it still wouldn't spin, even with the clutch all the way in. I was using a half inch breaker bar on the crank bolt, and all it did was tighten it. Not to mention I had to push it with my leg.

That alone would keep the engine from turning. You're cramming too much stuff (those bolts and ring) in there and nothing can turn because it's all jammed up. The same thing happened to me when I had an ATX and the torque converter wasn't set in the tranny far enough. Take out the ring that doesn't belong in there, use the proper flywheel bolts and everything should turn fine.

Dave, I'm almost certain that plate is pushing the flywheel bolt heads too far out and they are catching on the springs of the clutch plate.

Hopefully when you were trying to turn the crank at my garage the clutch plate didn't get damaged.

If I get done doing those jobs I mentioned before you have everything up and running, I'll see if Anthony and I can come up there this weekend.

That's cool man, I'm not dropping the tranny until probably Friday. I'm just going to drop the tranny this time instead of pulling everything out.

I reused my little ring when I went from Modular to Non-Mod. But you said you didn't get the right bolts though...

I didn't use it. I also got different bolts for the thicker flywheel.

I ordered the bolts today, they'll be in tomorrow morning. I guess I'll start dropping the tanny tomorrow evening. I'm going to take out that ring and put in the right bolts. I still don't understand how having shorter bolts in the flywheel and a piece of metal that's less than 1/16" thick would cause the entire engine to be locked up tight. We didn't touch anything inside the engine at all, so I don't see how it could be anything but the flywheel hitting something. Is there anything that goes on the end of the crank between it and the flywheel at all?
