What is the average lifespan of a 420 non-turbo engine. A friend of mine has the offer of buying a 96 Eclipse GS with 155,000 miles on it for $2,000 dollars. I told him Id do some research and let him know if it's worth it. What do you guys think?
Buy it. Some guys on here who have more miles than that and are turboed. As far as I know the life of the 420a is a long one. Granted some people have had their share of problems but its not hard to tell that its a very strong engine. I would buy it now knowing what I know about the 420a.
tell him to go for it but first do what esi420 says. i personally have 160kon my engine and it runs perfectly. these engines are made to last a life time. well maybe not but you know what i mean.

Just what EvulFlea said Bro. Hows the car itself? Even if it were in semi good condition I think its worth it. But if you got some money to fix it up go for it. Definetily rebuild and turbo that biatch. Let us know what he does.
I wouldn't buy an eclipse with 150k miles on it, no matter what engine it had. I wouldn't even buy a honda or toyota with that many miles (even though they are supposed to be really reliable). If your friend does buy it, and is willing to do a rebuild, then I guess it's an ok idea. But keep in mind a lot of other parts can fail besides the motor. Electrical stuff, ECU, water pump, etc. If he is willing to spend another 4k or so in addition to the cost of the car (in case of things that break) then he should get it. Otherwise, I would stay away from an engine with that many miles on it. A family friend used to own a Mitsubishi dealership, and when we bought this car, he told me it would probably last around 150k miles. I don't plan on keeping this car much past the 100k mark though. I'm at 50k now and it's been 5 years, so I doubt I will keep it another 5...

hell, if it's had regular scheduled maintenance, and it last you for a few yrs, for $2K you can't go wrong. It's hard to find good looking rides for that amount of ca$h. Good Luck!

Well, It is a friend of mine that is a girl. She isn't gonna mod it at all, shes isnt into that....heh. Right now she drives a pretty crappy 89' Cavalier.....this just kinda fell in her lap -- 150,000 miles..im thinking no.. But I'm not sure..
just tell her to go for it. if shes not going to mod it or anything then i think itl be fine. but make sure cuz i have 160k on my car and blue book value is like 7g's. so check it out.
