How do you check the fluid level of your AT tranny??? Some people say, let it run for a bit until it's warmed up, then go through each gears 1 by 1 and end at neutral, then check it. Then other people say to put it on park and check it from there. I tried both ways and it seems like if I put it on 'P', I have more fluid than to leave it on 'N'. Also, I've noticed that the fluid level fluctuates. Sometimes it would be near the warm area, then sometimes half way in between warm and hot. I did these tests for several days right after I go home. Thanks!!!!!

I'm not auto but my sister is. Drive home like usual and put the car(running) in nuetral (please put parking brake on) and check fluid. Make sure you're on a flat surface. Hope this helps!

Shit is all apart. Typical...

Well, when i had auto, this is what i was told to do. Drive the car and let it warm up for about 4-5 miles. They don't suggest checking level of fluid after longer drives. Park car on level surface, and keep it in Park, with the engine at idle. Check the level, it should be at the warm mark. If its low, then add VERY LITTLE fluid at a time to fill it.

So which way is it? The 'neutral' way or the 'park' way. So I shouldn't check after LONG drives, just enough for the engine to become normal operating levels. Thanks guys.

The owner's manual actually tell you to have the car stopped, and go through each gear, like shift from P to R, then to N, then to D, and then back to N or P (I forgot which one). It should be in your owner's manual...

The manual did state to go through each gears and end in 'N'. But I think they were talking about the Spyder and GS-T trannies. Anyways, thanks for the replies!!!!

I work in an auto tranny shop. After a rebuild, we put 4 quarts in, then start it, hold brake, go from reverse to drive until about 7 or 8 quarts usually. Then put it in park. This is with 2 people also. One in car, one filling. Put it in park on level ground, with it running, pull the dipstick out, wipe it clean, and put it back, pull it and check it. Do this again. If it's low, fill it more, get a good reading. Drive the car when full, but after you drive it, check the level again. We usually get a full reading, road test the car to make sure we rebuilt it properly, and then check the fluid levels again. Hope this helps.
