this is really not for a do it yourselfer, i'd recommend having a friend help you that knows what the f they are doing or taking it to a tranny shop. the guru of dsm tranny's mr sheperd made a few comments about our tranny when he put my lsd in. please make sure you dont try to do it yourself if you dont know what your doing inside a transmission

definetly take it to a tranny shop. youll want them to weld the center pin in place. a few people have had their's come out.. i haven't cause mine's welded, but a buddy of mine destroyed his tranny cause he didn't want to wait an extra day to have a shop weld it.

Safing brackets are a MUCH better solution. When the retaining pin (the little one) breaks, it is breaking because the spider shaft has seized to one of the spider gears because of thermal expansion. When this happens, the spider shaft spins with the spider gear, and shears the retaining pin. While it stays hot, all is well. When it cools down, though, it unsticks itself and backs out of the differential.

Think about it this way. If the spider shaft is welded in place, what happens if it freezes into the spider gear? Best case scenario, it spins inside of the gear, wearing and galling. Worst case scenario, it snaps either the weld or the shaft, and you wind up with a normal differential explosion. What is the improvement in having a welded spider shaft?

With safing brackets, if the retaining pin snaps, the pin stays in the differential. It is a huge improvement over having the transmission case being torn apart.

Here are my recommendations for preventing a differential explosion:
Don't do burnouts (duh)
weld the spider shaft <shudder> (don't like)
Safing brackets (like a bit better)
aftermarket spider shaft
slip in differential
slip in differential with safing brackets
slip in differential with an aftermarket spider shaft
RetroFit LSD conversion (GREAT!!!!! Best bang for the buck, in my opinion)
Quaife (all around best option, but 1300 smackaroos is tough to swallow!)
