I have a problem that is concerning me and I want your opinions on it. I just had my engine rebuilt and I got it back last tuesday, wednesday night/thursday morning the lifters started tapping and the CEL came on. I took the car back to the place where I got the rebuild done and they told me it was the EGR valve causing the CEL to come on and the Lifters they would take care of. Now I only drove the car exactly 97 miles since I've had it. I just got a call this morning and they said the cylinder furthest away from the EGR valve bubbled up and cracked. They are fixing it at no charge to me except for the EGR valve that needs to be replaced. They are also saying that because of the EGR valve malfunctioning, that's what caused the top of that cylinder to heat up and crack. Now my concern is, I have JE forged pistons that were installed with this rebuild. I have a strong feeling that there is no way that after 97 miles it could have cracked like that. The problem is I am not completely sure. Could this really be a possibility with the EGR or are they just trying to cover their ass cause they know they fucked up??? Any input would greatly be appreciated. TIA

id say they are covering thier asses! many of us dont even run the EGR and our shit aint cracking. Are you boosted? HEll, even if you are, there probabaly is no way you could have cracked a JE piston in only 97 miles. Espesialy if you werent boosting. ask them to give you the old piston and take a pic of it for us.
sounds a tad fishy to me....

Nope not boosted, all motor so far.
Also on another post that I posted about the head, someone shared that the Tapping I heard could have been a rod bearing. Could that contribute to the piston crack or is it a separate issue???

Tell them to use the side of a beer can to block off the port on the head for the EGR under the solenoid fixture for now and that you'll take care of that later. I would be concerned that they fucked up in machining your block or something and you will have problems in the future. Be sure to get it in writing that they said "this is the problem and we fixed it." Your engine is an investment not to be taken lightly imo.

Ok here is what the shop is telling me. The EGR recirculates cool air to the top of the pistons so that the piston doesnt over heat and crack . I also thought that it only had to do with emmisions and according to another local board, put warm air on top of the pistons to help with the warm up, but the shop is telling me something different. I think they just really fucked up and want to cover themselves big time. That's why they are blaming it on the EGR. Even in theory if that were to happen, it should not happen only after 97 miles. If I knew this was going to be such a problem I would not have gone to this place. I only went due to the warranty it came with.

if i was you i would go to their shop and ask to see the breakdown of the block, take pics and bring them back here and post them. I am getting my engine built right now and first they tore it apart and said that i blew a piston. I was in complete disbelief and i was actually a lil pissed. So the next day i drove 30minutes to go see it for myself, in this case they were right. Mechanic's can can lie more than lawyers... as far as the EGR it stands for *Exhaust Gas Recirculation* takes "semi-used" air and recirculates it back thru the intake manifold. It doesn't cool shit! my car will sound like, bumbabumbubavrooooooooooooooomrooooooooahhhhhhhhhhhhh, kishhhhhh www.dsmregistry.com/detail.php?carid=643 VW= The joy of driving DSM= The frustration of fixing

Oh I definately am taking pics. Everytime I go there I do just for my own records. I work in insurance so its second nature already. The EGR valve I already got so I am putting it in anyway and I took the whole day off tomorrow so I can go inspect my motor completely. I am soo pissed off.

WHAT
THE
FUCK?!??!!??!?!?!?!??
do they even know what "EGR" STANDS for?!?!?!?!? ya, dumping hot-ass exhaust gasses into the airflow is going to cool things down. and all that carbon helps to lubricate the engine. these guys are utter morons, and need to be learned on how engines work.

Make them fix your car at their cost, get in writing that everything is correct, and take all your warranty claims to them. Other than that, never step foot in that shop again. They have their heads up their collective asses to the shoulders. Either that or they're trying to bleed money out of you. Also like was mentioned earlier, get machining tolerances checked.
Lets just say this... I'm over 100whp and soon to cross 200whp. Thanx 2GNT! Now if I could only learn to prove it.

uh... okay.
EGR is emissions crap. The valve opens and exhaust gas is recirculated heating up the intake air temp so the engine can run leaner, and reduce emissions while cruising. It also helps warm the car up faster in the cold weather, etc.
No one offers to fix something they didn't break. If they didn't touch your EGR and they are blaming the problem on your EGR, they fucked up... bad. So chances are they did something wrong and are trying to double talk you while they cover their ass.

Ask them one question... "Can you explain how an Exhaust Gas Recirculation system is supposed to cool the pistons? Because as far as I know it is to recirculate exhaust gases to the intake manifold for emissions and cold weather warm up purposes..." This will do two things: 1. It will tell them you know your shit and are not to be fucked with. 2. It will show you how deep they are willing to go to cover up their mistake. After they answer you I would then ask them what really happend. If a piston cracked after 97 miles that is a major fuck up, the engine is not even broken in yet.. I would be seriously worried about what else they might have fucked up...
