#72157, "need some suggestions on headers...."

I have done a search already for this but I really didnt find what I was looking for so I am asking.....I have no experience on headers and was wondering what they do??? I mean, the research that I have done states you get some gains but nothing too big to boast about but they just look like ceramic coated or stainless steel exhaust manifolds. Is that really all they are?? If so why are there gains for headers vs manifolds?? If anyone can help me, please do so and thanks in advance.

By themselves, headers don't provide much of a gain on our cars. You shouldn't buy a header for the power gain it provides, but for the way in which it increases the flow of your entire intake/exhaust system. The smoother the air/exhaust flows, the better the other mods will be able to breathe and do their thing. It's an excellent supporting mod, but not exactly critical.

Using thermal coatings from Jet-Hot or the other lowers the under hood temps and the lower heat means longer component life. Also, the hotter the exhaust gas is, the more efficiently it flows (thus the use of iron vs aluminum).

Hope this little blurb helps you out some man. emoji

another thing to look for in buying a header is if it is a 4-1 or 4-2-1 header.
the difference between the two is how they are made. a 4-1 header looks exactly as it sounds, 4 exhaust tubes which combine into one tube near the bottom. and of course the 4-2-1 is 4 tubes then 2 and then to one tube.
with a 4-1 header you can expect gains in your peak hp as your power band will move up in the rpms.
with a 4-2-1 you can expect to see overall gains as the power band will smooth out throughout the rpm's.
hope this will help you in your search for a new header.

Yes, and it's HEADER as we have 1 exhaust bank. HEADERS implies 2 exhaust banks like you see on V-6/8/10/12 motors.

Thanks for the input guys.....Also the only reason why I pluralized Header is because there are so many different ones and I didnt know which ones are better than others...better gains..etc

I picked up on that immediately and that is why I didn't flame. emoji Aaron just did it as a preemptive move against theno0b who will bump this thread in 6 months asking about where to get his "headers" ceramic coated. emoji

There's a lot to take into account on header design. Style, 4-2-1, 4-1, short tube, long tube, collector legnth, collector type, downpiep size, etc. It depends on what you are looking for, but any decent header is going to help you.

Mandral bend tubing will flow better then it's cast counterpart, anyday. Don't look at dyno numbers, because everyone is going to quote stupid magazine article that produced only a couple peak hp out of a header. Yet no one mentions what it did for the power curve, or did to the torque curve. If you pick up 5 or 10 hp at various usable points in the power curve, I see it as a useful mod. I recommend headers to anybody staying NA.

You might get mixed emotions about this from these guys, but I feel you get what you pay for. I would suggest sticking with a good header like Greddy, or something comparable. Look around, you might be able to find something used for around $250.

ok let me break it down for you how it was broken down for me...

greddy, pacesetter, obx, ebay cheapies....

all use stock exhaust manifold maps... they were just tubed, and thrown on a car. not tested, no pressures measured etc. thats why they only make 1 or 2 hp at the wheels....

i know the fast fabrications(4-1 i think) has been properly tested, and im asuming the dc sports 4-2-1 has been tested (all their other headers are tested). SO they should produce quite a bit more HP than the others.

adventon.com has the dc sports for 240$ (says 380, but you get a discount once you buy it).

and the fast fab one is about 400, but it bypasses the cat...so if you have to worry about emissions, ide recomend the dc sports as buying a 400$ fast fab header, 120$ highflow cat, 50$ for welding would be pretty expensive.... double the price isnt worth a few HP imo....if no emissions, then fast fab is the way to go.

i personally, will be buying the dc sports...why buy a used greddy, or a new obx that make less hp... when you can get a dc sports that will make more for the same price?

I want to thank all of you for the help I got about the different headers. I originally wanted to go turbo but for my needs (and of course the cost after rebuild). Any other info that you guys can give me will greatly be appreciated.
