Stick a deep socket on the retainer, and whack it with a hammer. Doesn't really help much with assembly, but it is a quick way to pull it all apart. Grab the keepers up with a magnetic pickup tool afterwards, and all is well.

If you have access to a floor standing drill press, and cut up a socket, that can work pretty well...crude, but it works..

Yes there's a dealer specific tool, if you want to pay like $200 for it, it's a Snap On made tool as I recall. Probably can find get it from Snap On direct.

Or use a standard C-Clamp style compressor and cut up a deep well socket or piece of thick wall pipe the diameter of the retainers and use the hole you cut to get to the valve keepers.

at first i bought a overhead valve spring compressor and it looked like it would work but ther ewasnt enough room in between the spring and the wall of the head to clamp it on..then i wasted my money on an OHV spring compressor... i think the idea of cutting a pipe in the diameter of the spring would work with the c- clamp..thanks for the input. ill let you know if it works well ..

Miller tools makes one for us. It is far from cheap, though. I hear that the Matco one will work, too, and it is a bit cheaper.
