#70328, "How to clean internals of engine?"

I am currently taking my head off for a new head gasket and timing belt. I was wondering if I should clean out the internals of the engine to get rid of carbon deposits etc. If it would be wise to do this, what all should I clean and how should I clean it?

Yes this is a good idea while you have it open.

The carbon you can buy a carbon scraper to remove that. Or your next option is to wait till you have it all buttoned back up and run a can of Mopar Combustion Chamber cleaner through the engine. Just follow the instructions on the can. This stuff works very well for restoring and leaking seals due to buildup.

The internals you can wait till you have it all together and when you fill up the oil leave one quart of oil out and put in 1 quarts of trans fluid (ATF fluid). Next get in and drive down the road for about 20 miles babying the car. bring it home and change the oil. This will remove all sludge or crap in the motor. This will remove even the hardest of sludge and caking.

How safe is this? Very safe as long as you are not beating on the motor or driving it hard. As a mechanic i have done this when i pulled a set of vlave cover to find 1 huge mass underneith. Other dealer mechanics i taked with and worked with swore by it.

How does this work? I once pulled the valve covers off a jeep for lifter ticking with the intentions to adjst the rockers, i couldnt even see the rocker bolts or inner springs. I used this method and it removed all the sludge, note the aluminum wasnt shiny like new but it was nice and clean as if oil changes were done every 2500.

There are a lot of other oil treatments out there but i havent seen one work as well as trans fluid. How many times have you seen a dirty AOD trans emoji

What about those of us who are turbocharged? will ATF screw anything up in that department?

I was told i should run half a quart of MMO for 200mi to get rid of my lifter tick...

i've never heard of tranny fluid, i'd like to do a little research and see whats up with that. for carbon build up head to your local gas station that carries race gas and get you a gallon or two. race gas will clean the shit out of your motor, it will just cake you o2 sensor a tad, but that will come off in a day or so. plus you'll like the way your car feels with added power.

400whp or bust.

Yes you can still use this method for a turbo engine just dont spool it. A few pounds is ok because you want to get the parts hot enough for the crap to come loose. All ATF really does to the oil is thin it a tiny bit, it would be the same as adding 5w30 to straight 30w. Baby it like you are driving mom 3 cyl Geo with a rod knock..lol

Seriously just drive it like you just put in a new clutch and are breaking it in as sweetly as possible.

HMMM I kinda like the idea but it sounds like the ATF acts like a solvent, yes the oil would thin - which is the reason for babying it I don't think this could really harm your engine especially or a fuew miles - I may try it

I used ATF to clean out high mileage engines. I just take one of the vaccuum lines off the intake manifold or throttle body and stick in a bottle of tranny fluid and pinch the line with your fingers so to not hydrolock the engine. Do a half a quart of ATF, then half a quart of water, then the rest of ATF and water again while bringing the RPM up to 2500-3000. This of course cleans the combustion side versus the bearings/cam/valves but the principle is that ATF acts as a detergent which dissolves and breaks up deposits.

I don't like the sound of it.... and which vacuum line did you use/would you reccommend using? Sounds incredibly risky, but if it saves me from swapping oil again I'd like to try it

That is not me =] But he has the procedure down right. I have not performed the test on a DSM, but if I was going to I would use either a 1/4" vaccuum line or so (not too big) off the manifold or stick a straight line on where that vaccuum elbow is on top of our throttle boddies. But like it says, pinch it off and keep the RPMs up. The motor will bog, so the friend's job is to maintain the RPM as much as possible. Pinch the line off more as well if it bogs, and pinch it off completely if it sounds like it is going to kill. But definitley new plugs and oil change are necessary afterwards.

I would never have believed it if i would have tried it when i was told to. As odd a method as it sounds...it works. now putting in in a vacuum line is new to me, never heard of that one.

Shit is just new to you all the time then isn't it? I sure as hell wouldn't have believed the earth was round. And I also wouldn't have let my unworthy ex-gf suck my dick so much. So whats new? I'll try tide and give a report.....

Having Problems? Heres my Three step solution to anything 2gnt related.
Step 1: Put down everything in your hands.
Step 2: Grab a lucky strike, Smoke it.
Step 3: Walk to the fridge, double fist some keystone ice, sit down in the shade, drink one beer, finish cigarette, drink other beer, roll a joint, smoke it, walk back to your problem, and in about 5 minutes the solution will come to you.
If not. Go here: here

If still nothing, your trying to hard. Start over at step 1.
