#70226, "To Gut or Not to Gut.........That is the question!!!!"

I just resently purchased a 2.3'' cat back system and was just wondering if the gutted cat mod was a good thing to do. Have anyone do it and if so did it sound raspy like everyone has said or does it sounds just fine and increase your flow of exhasut. TIA

2.3" exhuat system, never heard of such a thing. Anyways, to answer your question, I would have a test pipe made instead of gutting the cat. Just buy a piece of pipe 16.5" long (and 2.5" diameter), bring it to Midas (or any other muffler shop), and tell them to put two flanges on each end. Costs about $30 to do, and if they ask, tell them that your replacing a resonator (even though they know your lying). I think it sounds great though with no cat. Keep the cat you have now just incase you have to pass inspections or anything else, thats what I did and I love the sound.

mine was gutted during the rebuild. sounds kinda raspy, but not too bad. I would also have to second the whole test pipe route tho. Kinda pointless to gut if still NA, and nice to have factory cat laying around in case needed

i gutted mine and hated the sound. went from smooth to raspy, and i didnt like the increased resonance it put off. if you wanna flow straight through, save yourself time and just get a test pipe

If you want a test pipe, I make kits that go for 45.00 shipped. It comes with the test pipe(2.5"), gaskets, hangers welded on, all hardware, and the special resistor for the rear o2 sensor so you dont get a CEL. I had a gutted cat for quite a while, and then made me a test pipe. Although I have a turbo, it made a good gain for me, since the inlet/outlet of the stock cat openings are 2",and I have a 2.5"/3" exhaust. If you use a round, straight through(fart can) muffler, it will get raspy with a gutted cat/test pipe, unless you put in a resonator, OR get a different style muffler.

Since that is a round, straight through muffler, it may be a bit loud/raspy. Although there is a resonator built in that piping, so it may not be too bad..its hard to say really. Any muffler like that, cat or no cat, will tend to be loud/raspy anyway.

like shit, N1 is basically the same as the catback that guy has. i had a testpipe and i couldnt stand it. use a resonator instead of a striaghtpipe, ittl sound alot better

I can also make resonated testpipes too, if thats what you prefer. Its a bit more expensive though. 80.00 shipped. Comes with everything I mentioned above too. A short resonator in place of the cat should help out with the raspiness.

I bought one of these.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33629&item=2465317868
It's a resonated test pipe, so to speak. And stainless steel that has all the necessary mounting brackets. They sell TONS of these on ebay for about $25. It installed in about 15 minutes and since I retained the downstream O2, I have no CEL due to the cat, or lack thereof.

That's not due to the cat, it's as a result of your muffler, which I might guess has a large diameter outlet.
