I put a pump and timing belt in my sister's GS about a week ago. It drove fine when I test drove it and when she's driven it this entire week. Now it has a funny idle and when she put the pedal to the floor from idle, it backfires through the intake. She drives the car fine for the exception of the idle. Will a tooth off trip the code? I'm gonna put my scanner on it tomorrow when I get the car again to see if I have any ignition faults.

i think you will get a cel but i dont know if it will kick on until there are serious timing issues like quite a few teeth off. i dont know as i have never had a cel on my rs.

well i broke a valve spring and dropped my valve and i didn't get a CEL.... not sure what it would trigger sensor wise if it's only a rough idle. Sounds like the car wasnt re timed perfectly. I re timed my 2 times RS before i got it perfect. The first time i was a half a tooth before tdc and it was firing before it reaches tdc. The way the timing is off can have different effects on the engine.
Re time it but this time use a straight edge like a ruler to line up the marks on the cam sprockets to the center of the cam bolts. and make sure your crank is right on tdc after you tighten that belt up.

It was timed fine b/c the car ran like a champ for 3+ days. Hopefully later I'll have time to grap a scanner and check it out. I'll have to check the inspection hole to see where the marks are at now.

just because it ran ok for a few days doesnt mean that it couldnt have skipped some teeth now. i did the belts on my gsx and it ran great for 4 days. then i got some really bad noises. turns out my auto tensioner was faulty and my car woulda skipped some teeth had i continued to drive it in its current condition. did you check the plugs and wires. a basic tune up could also fix the problem.
