ah the redundant HG issue....

1. remove all electrical around the head, a few conns under the TB, the TB sensors, the small harness that goes to your coolant sensors ect....you will notive the fule injector harness can stay, there is one plug for that by the TB. there is a harness that runs through the EGR pipe, dont worry that one is ok.

2. Remove your exhaust manifold/or turbo. you will be able to leave the manifold attached to downpipe if you unbolt the lower bracket on the block. this will allow you tp pull the manifold away from the head towards the radiator.

3. Disconnect fuel lines, drain coolant, remove overflow bottle and bracket. remove battery and air box. (not in that order)

4. remove power steering pump and bracket..note leave lines attached and pull pump out of your way.

5. put jack safely under motor, use a block of wood so you dont ruin the oil pan.

6. remove engine mount and large metal bracket

7. loosen alternator and remove belt.

8. remove crank pulley, you will need a puller and you will need to lower the engine a touch.

9. remove outer timing cover, timing adjuster, timing belt, idler puller (stationary one not adjusting one) there is another bracket on engine from mount remove it. remove the timing gears

10. remove the 2 or three bolts that secure the inner timing cover to the head.

11. remove the coil, valve cover. there is a hard vacuum line in your way now, just bent the mount tab away and work around it. remove camshafts. be careful when removing the camshafts...you need to bend the inner timing cover just enough to slide the cams out. dont overbend it, it will break, if you are worried remove it.

12. remove all followers and loosen head bolts per reverse order of torque procedure.

13. remove cam sensor so you dont break it.

14. remove coolant hose by the t-stat. on the backside of the intake there are two little bolts on the bottom that serve as braces for the intake. 15mm i think...reach down the passenger side by the firewall, put a ratchet on them and loosen, you dont need to remove them unless you are going to leave them out.

15. on the back side of the intake there will be a couple vacuum lines that go towards the passenger side of car....remove them from the intake and note thier location.

16. ok time to remove the head.....again becareful with the inner timing cover, you will need to bend it a bit to clear a boss in the side of the head. as you remove the head open it like a book from right to left and rest it on the edge of battery tray. you cant lift it up because of the EGR tube and the harness that runs inside it.

i prefer not to mess with the egr because bolts have a habit of breaking.

17. prop the head up, clean the surfaces, wipe out any crap in the cylinders, if you have a carbon scraper remove any carbon from the pistons. find the problem in your head gasket and look for cracks, if you see any call a junk yard..lol

18....go reverse and install. take note, you need to rotate the crank to # tdc (timing mark on crank) then lower head. you may also want to remoce 1 thread from each of the corner bolts to ensure a proper torque. the bolts bottom out and do not torque correctly for 95/96 not sure of 97.

15. when installing the camshafts besure to install them with the timing makrs lined up so you are nor forcing a valve into a piston.

thats it off the top of my head.

Terry
