Ok i need to replace my timing belt and maybe my head gasket. I think i can do the timing belt but i was wondering how difficult it is and how long it takes? I found instructions for it in VFAQ but they were for the 95-96 model, will this still be accurate for my 98? I could not find instructions for the head gasket. Could someone send me a link? How difficult/time consuming is the head gasket? its leaking from the drivers side back right. I heard i was supposed to trim that bolt. Which bolt is it, how much do i trim, and are there any special instructions for this? any help about any of the things would be greatly appreciated. -brian

So many question in one post...

If you have basic mechanic skills and you can follow directions you can replace your timing belt. It will take you a long time and you will need assistance and some patience. The first time i did it it took me about 7 hours. I put it back together 1 tooth off. So the next day it took me 4 hours to change it.

The procedure is the same for 95-99. The head gasket will be a little more involved than the t-belt change. Definitley have some one who has done this before help.

I beleive the new MLS gasket is thicker so that bolt may not have to be trimmed. Someone else may want to add input to that part. I have not replaced my head gasket yet and it was leaking there. I pulled the drivers side rear head bolt and took about a 1/4 of a inch off of it. It hasnt leaked again since.

Your best bet is to get with someone who has worked on this motor before to help you. Get yourself a Chiltons, do some searching on here, and some tools and you can do it emoji
