Feb-21-04 05:15 PM by MCubed45

so i was inspectin my engine bay with the engine running tryna find a vac leak and i noticed this crack on my coilpack. i moved in for a closer look and touched part've the casing the fricken thing SHOCKED me!! it scared the fuck outta me too... i felt it jump to my finger and from my leg back to the fender.

now obviously this crack shouldn't be there... anyone know if howell will give me a hard time about getting a replacement? is this doing anything bad to my engine for the time being? obviously the coilpack isn't insulated but will it be grounding out to anythinng else for the time being? my cars idle is rough so idk if this is related at all... i'm prett damn sure it wasn't like this when i got it. only had it for a month or two... i would swap in my stocker but i already converted the wire harness and it would be a MAJOR PITA to recut and solder everything...

You know if this thing would be a good upgrade for a turbocharged eclipse such as mine?

70 bucks isn't too bad if it actually makes some kind of a difference

being shocked from those 'can' hurt ya bad.. even kill you (although not likely) i just got the crap shocked out of me by my pickup a week ago while playing with the plug wires. in one hand and out the other.. right through my heart.. yikes...

and yes.. they can definatly be the cause of your bad idle.. you may have a bad connection with that plug wire.. or it could be arching to that bolt that is right next to it.. they run plenty of voltage to arch that far.

Those are awesome coils, and you will see a performace improvement if your running heavy mods, w/ this coil increase the gap of your plugs .015" more than what you would normally run. Higher voltage lets you have a bigger gap w/o detonation problems, bigger gap = longer spark, longer spark = bigger flame kernel = more final burnt fuel = more power.

Manufacturer defect, make howell replace it.

This reminds me of the time my shop teacher in high school told a kid to hold the spark plug wire and pull the crank for this little briggs and stratton lawn mower engine. This dude screamed like the littlest girl.

There is not enough current though the coilpack to kill you, nor make you sterile.

I imagine howell will replace it. If not, hell, it's not like it's an expensive part.

as long as you have the 97+ flat pin style wire harness it's a direct swap. if not you need to find a harness and solder it in so you can connect the coilpack.

i emailed howell today. i'll keep you guys posted.

"That is not a defect, that is damage. Coils do not crack unless they are damaged. It appears something has impacted the coil causing it to crack. It appears from the photo's you linked that the cracked coil tower is pushed down. I would think the hood may have been closed on something causing the damage. pretty sure it wasn't smashed by the hood or anything being that there's my STB running directly over it...

Oh that's f'king bs.

Your argument is that the defect caused the post to crack under normal conditions.

we'll see how this goes... i just emailed them back..

oh yea, this's direct from their site:
"This coil carries a full 1 year warranty"
http://www.howellautomotive.com/Howell/Store/catalog/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=671

i'm not sure what their terms are but i thought warranties covered things like this? emoji

Dear Gary,

The coilpack was not damaged in any way while it was on my car. The hood was not closed while any object was on the coil. To clarify, the coil tower is not bent in any way nor are there any markings which would indicate an impact. I also have a front upper strut tower bar which runs directly over the coil which would further prevent the possibility of any impact upon the coil. I do not know what caused the crack but being that the coil was only used as intended and under normal operating conditions I do not feel it is normal or acceptable for a product to defect in this way after such a short period of time. I would greatly appreciated your reconsideration in this matter. Thank you for your time.

Marc

most times, you can even bypass the middle man and contact the manufacturer directly.. and generally they give the customer what they want (provided that it is a resonable request). So if Gary declines your last submitted letter, I would try going direct, and if they replace it when gary wouldn't, :/
