Got the car back today..mechanic said everything checked out, except for the ecu. The mechanic said that he couldnt communicate with the ecu, even with two different machines. He took a read of all the sensor, coil pack, fuel pressure and all and said everything checked out. Now, for the compression test, even with the head being milled 50 thousandths the numbers varied from 185 to 195. I know for a fact that they shouldnt be that low, but if the headgasket were blown the numbers would fluctuate at bit more than that. Im getting a new ecu in a few days, and im really wondering about the compression thing, what all can i do to correct this?
One more thing, the mechanic also said that i have to buy an ecu from teh dealer or it wouldnt work in the car. He said id have to have the new ecu flashed to "match up" to my car. BS or no?

BS. These cars do not store a VIN number like newer model cars do. Any ECU of the same year and drive type will work.

Well if the motor wasn't running, which it sounded like it wasn't, then a compression test with a cold motor will always be low. Normally, and you should be, doing the test with a fully warmed up engine. If he got those numbers as cold, then I'd say thats pretty darn good.

its not that he couldnt plug into the pcm, he said that his system couldnt communicate with the ecu, and he also said he couldnt clear any codes either and it was like the ecu just wasnt responding to anything he did. The last time i took the car to mistu they said the ecu could be on its way out and this kind of sums it up for me. Ill get exact info when he gets online tonight, ive been talking to him for a week and a half now and i really want all of the specifics, especially if the motor was cold when he did the compression test. With that, i dropped the car off at 10:30 this morning and he was done by 2, and he said he spent two and a half hours on the car, meaning the car was probably pretty much cooled off, so thats always a plus.

some notes from aol...
fc735: yes
X Hyper TSi X: i talked to a few guys on the eclipse page and they say i can use any ecu, our ecus dont have the vins programed in
fc735: ooooooooook
X Hyper TSi X: i found one for 65 shipped to my door
fc735: i was told that it has to be flashed....but ok
X Hyper TSi X: nah, the 95 do have an upgrade though
fc735: right
X Hyper TSi X: which im taking it to mitsu soon after anyways to make sure
fc735: that works
X Hyper TSi X: also, did you do the compression test on the motor when it was warmed up?
fc735: yes
X Hyper TSi X: ouch, then i have a problem
fc735: whats that
X Hyper TSi X: stock, before my headgasket change i got 210 in two cyliners, and the other two were way low, around 112 or so
X Hyper TSi X: and with the mill i should be abouve
X Hyper TSi X: above* that
fc735: hmmm
fc735: i didnt do a leakdown test, since mine is broken
fc735: there is still a possibility that it has internal issues
X Hyper TSi X: thats what i was thinking too
fc735: but the ECU is the only thing left, on management end, that could be wrong
fc735: possible to have an intermittent valve issue, but the vac. readings were great
X Hyper TSi X: yeah i had the head reworked over the summer
fc735: nogt fluctuating like a burned valve, sticking one would do
X Hyper TSi X: valves removed, cleaned, new vavle stems and all
X Hyper TSi X: see that wouldnt make me run rich would it?
fc735: you really arent running rich
X Hyper TSi X: i smelled gas like a mofo on the ride home
fc735: plugs looked good
fc735: yuea
fc735: the leaking line....

X Hyper TSi X: also, someone asked me about the ecu, you said that your tools couldnt get a reading?
fc735: yeah
fc735: i had to go through OBDII generic to get communication
fc735: neither the MODIS or mine on manufacturer specific would communicate

Discuss!

I remember when I met up with you before here in Va Beach, I got my datalogger to communicate with your ecu with no problem. The problem with your car hasn't changed since then has it??
