Just yesterday i finally had the chance to install DR1665's ground wire kit. first off, i'll say this, if you don't have them yet, get them, they're real freaking nice. anyways... i installed them properly and now my battery light comes on. i don't understand, i just put a brand new alternator in about 1-2 months ago. did i forget something, leave something out... i don't know, i'm clueless. at first i thought it was because i left the factory alternator ground disconnected but i put that back on and now have the factory ground wire and ground wire kit wire both bolted down to the alternator, and still have a battery light coming on. any help would be appreciated. thanks.

more than likely you blew the fusible link for the alternator. its in the fusebox in front of your ECU and has a screw that holds it in. FYI, whenever working with electonic shit always disconnect the neg battery terminal. did you hook up the ground to the right part on the alternator? if you grounded the positive on accident you'd either pop the fusible link and/or fry your alternator. let me know how that works out for you

I think I'll have to get a picture of the bolt we used to ground this location. You must have shorted it somewhere sir. We have had the one installed in run4cvr's car (ground loops and everything) for months now with no CELs or related problems. My bad for not going down to the car and snapping a quick pic. emoji

Thanks for the support regardless. :thumsup

uh yeah, it is the only belt on the backside of the intake mani (actually right under it pretty much, well of course on the backside of the block, the belt runs from the altenator to the crankpulley. And basically all altenators have the same design, all that I've worked on anyways, unless its a generator instead of a altenator. It's a pain to remove or adjust, just b/c of where the bolts are located and how small of an area you need to work in. But if you are removing an altenator, I can tell ya some tricks. Hit me up on here or aim (rawdawgstv). Lets just say, if we had a race of all 2gnt people who could take their altenator totally off, replace it and put the belt on.. I think I'd win (not tryin to brag guys), definately not, but if you've fucked up as many times as I have on it w/ the problems I had, and done it as many times as I have, you'd understand... emoji g'luck

nah man.. I looked for a picture, but I couldnt find one. the wire that goes from your wiring harness goes in this order on the bolt that is on the bottom back of the altenator. If its a new altenator, there should be a black plastic piece down there w/ a bolt and 2 nuts on it. If not, its the only bolt down there that's connected to the altenator permanently. Go it this order... black plastic piece + nut (10mm I think, maybe 8mm I cant remember) + wiring harness end (the round female fittin on the end of the wires + the other nut, I dont see any torque specs on it, so just tighten it down until the 2 nuts are almost touching eachother having only the female plug between them. haha that sounds funny. I may be able to have pics tomorrow for ya, no promises though. Oh and before you do anything, make sure that female connector is clean, I mean cut the tape away/plastic cover, and scrub the wire-to-plug w/ a wire brush, and then fully cover it w/ electical tape. This is very important, I didnt do this the first time I replaced my altenator, and then I had to do it 3 more times, b/c it still wouldnt charge my battery, and that fixed it. MAKE SURE THE NEGATIVE TERMINAL IS BARE ON THE BATTERY. You always do that, I dont care if you are freakin changing the plugs/oil/wires/belts, anything, always do this. we conduct electricity and a small spark from us, can fry something important in the electrical units of a car, so that's why you do so. G'luck man. Oh and I'd do the wire before the belt. easier access. peace

ok so i got to take a little better look at it today... i blew the alternator fuse. i took off DR1665's groundwires, put the stockers back on and replaced the fuse and have no battery light. i don't understand what the problem is. should i have both groundwires connected to the alternator? some more help would be great cause i'm quite confused. i don't understand how a better, more capable wire would be causing my alternator fuse to blow. help. i want to put these bad mothers on and have them work.

Diceman, you got DR1665's ground wires didn't you? did you ahve any problems? i think i'm going to try it again with a spare fuse handy. so any other suggestions... does order matter when putting the ground terminals on the alternator? like stock ground - kit ground - bolt or kit ground - stock ground - bolt... i don't know, just a retarded shot in the dark.

So far, you seem to be the only person with a problem sir. I've looked into it, and there are 5 others out there with the same kit installed with no problems. I am racking my brain trying to figure out why the batt light is coming on for you. It makes sense to me to think that if connecting our kit and grounding the case/bracket of your alternator is causing you a CEL of sorts, maybe there is a short inside the alternator itself that makes use of the lowered resistance of the new wire. I can't really figure it out much beyond that.

I'm gonna suggest trying the kit again. If the battery light comes on, try undoing the battery and maybe resetting the ECU. If it's still on, leave the kit installed and take it to AutoZone to have them test the alternator and the battery. Maybe have them test it all when it's stock. This way, you can get some voltage and current numbers to compare before and after.

I really hope this works for you man. /me crosses fingers

hmm well thank you very much DR . i have put every ground wire kit wire back in except the alternator wire and no problems. i bought an extra fuse so that if i have problems again i can put another fuse in. i'm going to put the alternator ground back in as soon as i get a chance, maybe tomorrow. if anything goes wrong, i will do just what you said, i'll take it to autozone and see what they can tell me. thank you very much for your tech support emoji

Um do you realize that the big wire that is bolted to the alternator is the POSITIVE wire?!!??!!!! the alternator is grounded through the mounting to the engine. The stator is charged by the small plug on the alternator. YOu blew the fuse becasue you hooked up the new ground wire to the positive terminal! O_o

Anywhere that touches the outside case of the alternator should be ground. That's why that plastic piece is between the bolt and the case, to keep the hot wire from grounding out and blowing that fuse. I had a problem with mine where the plastic piece cracked, and I blew about 3 of those 120amp fuses. Right now I have a 100amp in there and it's working fine. I ended up putting about 4 pieces of inner tube on that stud sticking out of the alternator to insulate it from grounding out. You could probably hook the ground wire up to one of the alternator mounting bolts if the loop is big enough to fit over them.

Lets just say this... I'm over 100whp and soon to cross 200whp. Thanx 2GNT! Now if I could only learn to prove it.

alright, i grounded it on the upper mounting bolt that is used to loosen the alternator for adjusting. it works fine there. i noticed a small power gain. very nice and smooth acceleration. it's worth the 30 bucks for sure. thanks for everyones help.

Damn do0d.

That's where you were supposed to be grounding it! I guess it's my bad for not having a picture of that in the instructions, but it's pretty much the first bolt you see when you look down there. I'd have to really stretch to find somewhere else to connect it. emoji You no0b. LOL. Glad to hear it works and you can tell it works. YAY FOR UGHEAD!

i was a little scared because mine have not been installed yet. the car is sleeping. emoji way to go to getting it fixed. im glad it was just user error and not anything wrong with the kit itself. WAY TO GO!

what you didnt isnt that bad... not nearly as bad as what i did..

not taking off the neg ground when i was re-wiring my headunit... acc pwr & dimmer wires touched... smoke, flashing lights... and i now have no gauge lights...

atleast your mistake is understandable... mine was just stupid :-p

hey thanks for not ripping me too bad. and yes DR1665 i'd have to say i pulled a major noob move there, hahaha. eh, anja, that sounds like something i'd pull. i would like to say this... after driving around a day or two with everything grounded the RIGHT way, there is a noticable acceleration improvement. i was kinda iffy about saying there was a definite improvement right after i had gotten the alternator thing right. you know how the psycho thing weighs heavy after you just put a new mod on.... but it wasn't in my head, there's an improvement. and i'll say one more "thanks a million" to DR and Uber for making these sick ass kits. BTW did anyone see JWoodley's kit. His kit doesn't even ground the f'n alternator. A wonderful example of "you get what you pay for" LMFAO. emoji
