My car is acting up again, and i need some input. I recently recet my ecu, which in turn caused my car to start popping and hesitating again. I thought i had this problem figured out(clutch going out), but apparently its not the problem. The car will drive fine for the first five minutes or so, but after that any acceleration in 3rd -5th gear results in a popping, and just no acceleration whatsoever. I figure if the clutch was going out it would hesitated in all gears, and my rpm would flutter when it missed. But, my rpms stay the same, no flucuation and the car just wont accelerate as normal. This ONLY happens when i recet the ecu, and after a few days the problem isnt gone, but its minimal..the car does it after a few hours of driving.

Some thoughts on this...a bad sensor(but wouldnt a CEL go off if it were that bad off?)..and ive replaced numerous sensors throughout the engine

Ecu is bad(im getting a newer ecu in a few days)

My replacement list is extremely long when it comes to this problem and litterally the last peices to the puzzle are the ecu, pistons, rings and major engine components.

Now i figured the clutch would fix my problem but obviously its not, do you guys have any input on this at all?..and if so its appreciated greatly!

if your ignition system is good i would check the fuel system. could be a clogged injector or the spring on your FPR is softened up.

I gotta agree with those guys, it sounds like bad ignition or fuel problem.

coil is new, wires are new, plugs are fairly new, fuel filter is fairly new. My fpr was replaced by the dealer the last time it was serviced. Also im not turbo, just a n/t. And, i replaced my injectors about 3000 miles ago with newer stock injectors(38xxx miles on them). With all of this, what else can i look for?

Also, i forgot to add that i smell gas when this problem occurs, and at other times inbetween.(i have a gutted cat btw)

Have you verifiied the mechanical timing? Is the cam angle sensor harness secure, dry, and unfrayed? What about the crank angle? Have you tried blocking the EGR to see if perhaps its a bad EGR valve?

Timing was set my Mitsu after a local shop shibbied the job. Im going to check the cam angle in a minute after i finished this up. My crank angle sensor has never been touched, is this something that i should just replace after 146xxx miles of use? Wouldnt i get a CEL? Ive been through two egr valves trying to figure if that was the problem, the first egr valve gave me a CEL, the second did not. Also, i replced the cam angle sensor a few months ago.

Would any of this account for a gas smell while driving?

Where are you smelling fuel? With your window down and idling in place? If you smell fuel, logically I would look for a fuel leak. Check your fpr since it was replaced at the dealer, it is possible they did not tighten something properly and would cause for power loss at higher RPM. With as many miles as you are describing too, go over all your fuel supply & return lines for cracked/old components.

Turbo- Yes the car stutters/bucks while accelerating mostly under 4k rpms, and i smell gas while driving, not while idling.

Ive checked over most of the fuel lines/return lines and such and everything looks good

when you reset the ECU your car naturally runs rich, your car with no cat will pour unburnt fuel into that and possibly burn up your second 02 sensor and that in turn is probably making you run even MORE rich....at least thats all i can think of emoji. check the plug gaps

Your timing along w/ something like this could be the problem. I was helping my bro w/ his 1g log/tune, and we came across this problem, and it was his timing. His EGT's were way up and figured that he is getting burning fuel going through his mani. We leaned it out thinking maybe it was running pig rich and nothing changed. So we looked at the timing and it was off by I think 4 degrees. We fixed the timing and that seems to have fixed the problem. And his CEL never came on during this problem either. Hope it helps.

my timing has been done twice to make sure its on target. With the running rich problem, this sounds like it could be the culprit. What should i gap my plugs to in order to compensate for the extra fuel, or what can i do to fix the problem?

im going to try premium gas and some octane boost along with a compression check, then if that doesnt work i'll replace the coolant temp sensor. If both of those dont work im going to buy cam gears and set my timing that way. After all of this and it doesnt fix the problem im going to blow it to hell!
