is there anybig downside to this?
i was thinking of mixing the coolant 60%water 40% coolant instead of the 50/50 mix. improper engine heating, could it alter peak performance?

Don't....

Your engine won't operate at the proper temperture.

If you want cooler, get a 160* howell thermostat, it's the lowest you should do.

technically, the IC engine get more effeicient the hotter you run it. Running no thermastat wont allow you engine to warm up. I personally dont ever hit the gas hard until my car is warmed up properly.

the problem with not having a thermostat is that the coolant velocity will be very high due to the fact that a thermostat also acts as a restrictor.

it will take quite some time for your car to heat up, once it is up to operating tempature it will just keep getting hotter and hotter because it's being pumped through the radiator so fast it doesn't have time to cool off.

over the summer my thermostat took a dive and i ran for about a week with no thermostat, it sucked IMO. no matter what the car was either too cold or starting to overheat. if i drove around like a hooligan my water tempatures would get up to around 235 degrees, then go down to around 210 at idle.

buy the 160 degree thermostat from Howell, i have it and it works good...
