Maybe a windmill with a really low gear ratio?

I think it means material is removed from the mating surface of the head to make the cylinders smaller, which would mean the engine would cram the same amount of air and fuel into a smaller area, making a higher overall compression.

Am I right?

Close. Milling the head dosent make the cylenders smaller but rather the compression chamber on the head. Milling takes material off of the bottom of the head causing the head chamber to be closer to the piston therefore making less room for compresion, thus raising the compression ratio.

best time so far 14.3 @ 101.1mph

pistons is the right way to do it the cheap way is milling.

remember when you mill your also retarding timing because it creates slack in the timing belt.

and also have more of a chance to hit your valves and pistons..

You can have it cheap, fast or good. Pick any two.

If you want it cheap and fast, it's not going to be good.

not to mention that if you ever need to do clean the head up later (rebuild etc) you will have a lot less to work with and might even need a new head. Think of it like turning rotors. There's only so much you can take off.

Well yes you do change the timing slightly, because of timing belt geometry, not tension. Tension is controlled by the tensioner. Moving the cam sprockets location changes the geometry of the path of the timing belt. Whether you are closer to advancing or retarding your cam timing depends on how much you mill and what is the closest tooth on the gears to use.

A high compression mill. Would be a high compression (above stock) engine.

A turbo engine would be a low compression mill. And their is no way to mill a head or block to reduce compression.

Mills, Windmill, Watermills are power plants. Your engine is a powerplant, so for slang engine = mill.

Oh yeah, it's a challenge milling a head with a flat file, isn't it MotoFool? Or do you use a Dremel? It's tough to see the mirror shine you put on the bottom of the head with the dim lights in your parent's basement.

That's true, but I think DR166565545 is right in this case. I think this guy is talking about milling the head for higher compression.

All the haters: here's your chance to jump on me for "slamming" Howell Automotive. Howell, poor form my 420a companion. Combustion chamber work can lower compression, I'm sure you know that. You can perform combustion chamber work with a mill, if you have a nice mill.

Anything thing that takes away from compressed volume raises compression. anything that adds to it reduces compression. polish up the head around valves (removes material), even seat the valves deeper into the head, thicker head gasket all reduce compression. Mill it down, thin head gasket, and raise the compression, you will.

That would be called a CNC Machinging center and most likely be a 5 axis maching. Kind of like refering to a new GT40 as a Model T. Yea same company and both are transportation, but the similarity ends there.
