#65743, "Got the new motor running"

Just wanted to let you all know that I got the motor in. Just got back from the break in run. It runs sweet, sounds sweet, and looks pretty sweet. Fired up on the first turn and it turned out the only thing I forgot to do was hook up the alternator, but that was no biggie. While I was driving it felt like the timing was off a bit when you really goose it and I'm not sure if it's from the cams(Gude), the new cam gears(Bomz adjustable), or just that the computer was reset. Mechanically the timing looks perfect and it really runs like a striped ass ape when you ease into WOT so I think I'll run it a bit and see what happens with that. I got is a little piston slap with the CP 10.5:1 pistons when it was cold - no biggie. Its finally loping at idle like it should. My old timing belt was just wasted and I think my tensioner wasn't doing so well either. Its got a nice powerful loping sound now at idle - very sweet.

I took a good bit of pictures that I'll post tomorrow. I'll try to give a bit more info about my head and intake manifold as well. Time to sleep.

IT RUNS! emoji

Very Nice Jim! Look forward to more reviews.

His cams are regrinds and won't be as agressive as your Crower Stage 2's, so less is needed to fool the ECU.

Congrats! Just curious, but do you plan to stay all-motor with the 10.5:1 c/r or do also plan to add turbo?

congrats jim..

the big question is did you have fun and was it worth it?

You can have it cheap, fast or good. Pick any two.

If you want it cheap and fast, it's not going to be good.

Thanks guys.

Hell yeah it was fun. From the test drives I did today I'd say it was well worth it. The suddun WOT issue went away, probably a computer reset gremlin.

Michael is right about the cams. The Crane 2s have 10 more degrees duration and 7 more degrees overlap then mine. I'm using the stock injectors and fpr and it seems to be working just fine.

I don't plan to stay N/A. I've been putting together a turbo system for a while now. This rebuild was just in response to a decline in compression on the old motor. I've been keeping track of it and it has just been going down to the point where I was running like 180-160. I didn't want to boost on crappy compression, so I put in a good motor. The pistons are 10.5:1, but with the deck and head milling the compression should be somewhere around 10.7:1 which is just about what I wanted it to be(11:1). I'll be using an 8 injector system and if you notice in the pictures you'll see that I installed the modified manifold with this new motor. The EIC, FPR, filter, and hard lines(from engine bay to tank) are already installed, it'll just be a matter of swapping in my modified fuel rail and a few new lines to get that fuel system all hooked up. I still need some piping, gauges, and a couple of other little things to get the turbo system running. Should be fun - I'll keep you all posted on the progress.

Some audio? Ok, I did the best I could with my crappy little external mic - http://www.dimensia.com:81/jimbo/netfiles/NewMotor.mp3

...and some pictures.

Heres my old head with a facelift from Jess Miller's Machine shop in West Chester PA did the work on it. Glass bead cleanup, 3 angle valve job, and a 5 thousanth mill. The head guy(Dave) is definately gonna do the port job when I get it done. His work is spectacular.

Here's my little helper. You can see the new Bomz adjustable gears in this shot. Blue anodized - mmmmmm. They seem to be working just fine. You can also see the secondary rail on the intake manifold. I was a bit worried about clearance when installed, but as it turns out there's still plenty of room back there.

Here's both my helpers. My brother-in-law Steve came over to help me install it. I started at about 1pm on Saturday - first order of business was to go to Sears and buy a 12pt 1/2 deep socket to finish torquing the head. From then till 4am Sunday we just put in a marathon of work to get it finally assembled and installed and running. Definately couldn't have gotten that far in one day without his help. It was cool. In this shot he's fabricating an EGR block off plate from some stainless stock.

The 10 million BTU fart-gas powered Eclipse....or just me in the engine bay.

Yeah, it was definately worth it.

Higher compression with aturbo, the only way to fly a turbo, I'd never drop C.R. for boost. I can't wait to see the final product scream.
