I have been told that putting on an aftermarket muffler would decrease my low end torque. So I decided I would put an exhaust from that of a GST. However I like the loud obnoxious exhaust sound. Would it make much difference if I just put an aftermarket muffler on my stock exhaust compared to putting one on a GST exhaust? Also, does it really matter what kind I get? I mean comparing something like HKS or Greddy to that of an Auto Zone muffler? I know there would be some difference but anything substantial? I do race my car (on a track) so I am looking for some quick hp add-ons. Any help will be very appreciated. Thanks

Ok Im not gonna be a dick here...
Just to let you know, a muffler does not add horsepower, it just doesnt... So, for some guidance, if u want to add some hp (and u like an obnoxiously loud muffler) then I would suggest an Apexi N1... Dont go out and spend $100+ on a muffler that will do nothing but make ure car sound like crap, and attract cops to ure direction... Save ure money and get a full 2.5" cat-back (def. worth it)... I hope that some guidance away from rice...

Why do you think the most common mod is to change to a gst muffler?

Mufflers can prevent flow just like anything else in the exhaust system. A straight through design will most likely flow better then a reflector chamber design (i think that's what they're called).

To answer the question though, no, if you're just going to change the muffler, you probably won't see any substantial gain. If i had to put a number to it, i'd say 1-2 hp, if even. Remember, all you're doin is changing your power curve (slight shift to higher end), not really gaining "new" hp.

The gst catback is the same size as the gs/rs catback, it just has an extra resonator/glasspack in the piping.

I would advise agaisnt getting just an aftermarket muffler.. you're gonna have to weld it and stuff.. might as well go all out and get the full 2.5" catback system so you can change it back to stock if you ever needed to.

I'm sure many would agree that loss of low end torque isn't really noticable.
