#64230, "wasnt thinking *hits himself*...what will happen?"

when i changed my valve cover gasket, there was some oil in 3/4 of the spark plug wells. i was dumb and didnt shop-vac the oil out, took out the plugs to change them, thus causing a pretty good amount of oil to drain on the pistons. when i crank this beast over, what can i expect? some oil burning off for a few minutes at startup, or something worse will happen to compromise the motor itself? i hope its the former possibility:o .

oil in ur spark plug wells emoji, you replace the spark plug gaskets?

how much oil actually got in there? you'll be fine imo. burning oil sometimes can cause detonation, i dont think you have anything to worry about. just get a pic of the blue smoke ball that comes out ur exhaust and post it emoji

prepare to piss off all the neighbors sir. :p

you gonna be smokin for a while. I wouldn't drive it since you might get a ticket or something, but I think unless you dumped a shit load of oil in there, you should be okay. I mean you pour a capful in when you do the leak down.

yea i replaced the spark plug well gaskets too.

quite a bit heh. the amount of oil at the most can be measured as about 2 inches up the "rubber spark plug wire connector boot thing."

I don't know how much fulid it actually takes to hydrolock our engine...but if there is enough oil in the cylinder doesn't run the risk of that?

y dont u just take ur plugs out and crank then engine, im sure some of the oil will come out and the stuff thats left wont be enough to hydrolock but will smoke a bit.

ok so let me understand you. take the plugs OUT, crank the engine without plugs or wires. will the pistons create enought of a force to SHOOT out the oil?

i dunno if thats such a grand idea with taking the plugs out and all that but maybe... emoji

i'd keep the plugs in, start up the car and wait for it all to burn off and blow out on the exhaust stroke (i.e- blue smoke cloud) then after all that i;d take the plugs back out and clean all the oily b.s off em

"blow by gas"= oil coming back into the intake tract from a motor with positive crankcase ventilation, the point is so that the excess oil is burned up on the next combustion cycle. i doubt your car will even start, but "hydrolock" you dont have to worry about imo. hydro meaning water or a chemical that contains hydrogen. you wont hydrolock. thats a completely different thing

yea, i think i am going to go with that procedure. i am a little uneasy with cranking over her without the plugs in.

thanks 8u.

No, he was right. Crank it over without the plugs. Keep a shop towel in each spark plug well, and unplug the coil pack. Crank it over a few times, and whatever doesn't wind up on the shop towels will wind up in the exhaust manifold. It won't smoke for long, either, once you get it all back together. It is possible to hydrolock your motor with oil. Hydrolock refers to the process of the motor trying to compress an incompressible substance, like a liquid. Oil is a liquid, and therefore is capable of locking the motor.

Depending on the amount of oil that went in, if you start your car it may bend a rod. Remember, oil can't be compress. If you have too much oil the force of the rod going up will try to compress the oil. When the oil don't find anywhere to go, you will bend a rod. The same happens with water. Removing the plugs is the best way. You don't want any compression in the cylinder with liquid inside. Air at the contrary, can be compress.

I would not start the engine. Turn it over like the other guys said without the spark plugs in, or duct tape a hose or metal tube to your vacuum and stick it down in the cylinder and vacuum the oil out.

Take out your plugs, and just like when your doing a compression check, disconnect the two relays near the driver side firewall. This is going to shoot all the oil out the cylinder when you go to crank it.

so make sure you get someone to 'look down the sparkplug wells and look for something to happen' while you crank it over

Why don't you just get a vacuum hand pump (like those used for bleeding brakes) and pump it out without getting oil all over your engine, friends, neigbors, and/or vacuum cleaner?

Just remove the spark plugs and crank the engine. No special tools are required. Doesn't get more simple than that.
