modular is all once peice, disc, pressure plate, flywheel. they are riveted together, makes it a lot easier when all u have to worry about is a whole and the output shaft from the tranny

The long black thing is the clutch alignmnet tool (which you need when you have a non-modular clutch to center the pressure plate and disc.
On the whole different between the two. Modular comes with everything rivited together like turbo8u said. On top of that you must realize that this requires a flex plate (also has the starter teeth) because there would me no way to mount the clutch to the crank. So in this scenario you bolt the flex plate to the crank and the clutch assembly to the flex plate. This is up is easier to install (no alignment issues) and also makes installation and removal of the trans easier. When the clutch disc goes out though you have to replace the whole thing or have some one take it apart and put it back together with a new disc.
The non-modular assembly has two divisions in it. A non-modular clutch by it's name sake has seperate pieces. It has a pressure plate, clutch disc, and flywheel. You have to bolt everything together and use the clutch alignment tool to make sure everything is center (or you get an unbalanced assembly ... yuck!). The division in this setup comes from the two choices for the type of flywheel. One choice is a standard flywheel. It has starter teeth and bolts to the crank. With this the need for a flex plate is removed. Though it makes installation and removal of the trans a little more difficult because the bell housing needs to clear the whole clutch assembly.
The second choice would use a flywheel like the one used in the modular setup: no starter teeth, and bolts to the flywheel. I personally like this option (but I have the standard non-mod setup ... DOH!) because it combines the benefits of both. Replace parts you need and removes installation hassle from added clearance. Also as far as I know only Fidanza makes the flywheel with no teeth.
