If I'm not mistaken, this only applies to 4G63's when you see dsm guys talking about it. I believe they are talking about the flywheel bolts on the crankshaft. Appearently the 6 bolt engines don't suffer from crankwalk like the 7 bolt engines. 6 bolts came in the 1st gen DSMs, 7 bolts in the 2nd gens.

They are referring to the number of bolts that the crank is bolted to the flywheel. 1g's have 6 bolts, and 2g's have 7 bolts. I think the 420A is an 8 bolt or something. Its been a year and a half since I've seen a 420A flywheel so I cant remember.

I have heard that the newer 7 bolts don't walk (like 98+) if I remember right. But a lot of people swap in the 6 because like he said, no walk.

7-bolt = 1992.5 and up

no one knows what causes crankwalk, although ive heard everything from oil squirters to transmission being the cause of it.

Flip up headlight DSMs all had 6bolts. The early (jan-april) 92's with flat light housings used up the left over 6bolts.

Another fun distinction is 4bolt/3bolt rear differential on GSX's. (4bolt is better). So if you can find the "perfect" 4g63 it would be an early 92 GSX with 6bolt engine and 4bolt rear. But none of the "x-bolt" things apply to 2GNTs at all.

The reason 4g63's get crankwalk and 420a's dont is because we have a modern integral "bedplate" that aligns all the crank bearings perfectly. The 4g63 is an older design that uses 3 brackets to hold the crank in the block, and only 2 small bolts holding the thrust bearing in place (that takes all the lateral load of the clutch, etc).

Thats not why. The chonic 2G crankwalk problem is an inherent design flaw, and no one really knows why. Dissected and thinly sliced blocks reveal smaller oil squirters, some think its clutch related, etc etc. The reason isnt because 4G63's dont have bedplates, otherwise how would you explain 6 bolt motors being crankwalk free? I am one of the "lucky" ones to get a 6/4 combination. No fear of crankwalk, and no fear of breaking axles.

91 awd: 60-1, 880's, E-Prom, etc.
