#62045, "Why am I leaking oil after HG install?"

so i just finished my head gasket install and got her running 2 days ago. i put some news paper down where i park at so that i can see if i'm leaking anything. sure enough, there's oil on the news paper. i jacked the car up to see where the oil was coming from but i was kinda hard to see. it's coming from the rear passnger side corner... the same place it was coming from before my headgasket install. i had the head resurfaced so i'm clueless. help...

Try and find out for sure where it's coming from.

It might not be the HG. I've read from other people who have had issues with a cam seal or perhaps even a rear main seal, that at first, appear related to the HG.

You did use the proper sealer when installing the HG, right?

Well, things that leak oil for a $1000 Alex:
-Oil pressure sender
-valve cover seal
-cam seals
-rear main seal
-oil pan gasket
-HG

There's at least 6 things there you can run your hands around to see what is leaking. Give her hell!

Shit is all apart. Typical...

proper sealer? i didn't think you had to use any sealer for the headgasket install. that's what the mitsu tech. guy that helped me out told me. it's not my cam seals, i checked those, those are def. not leaking. the main seal, where's that? low? it doesn't look like it's coming from the headgasket i looks like the oil is coming from low on the block. it's dripping from my oil filter, oil pan, axels, crossmember. does that narrow it down at all... any ideas emoji

No copper spray sealer on your HG? Hmm..that may not be good...This special sealer is used mainly for heat transfer and conductivity, but also acts to seal very small imperfections in the metal. But, if you think its coming from lower on the block, that may not be it. But IMO, you should always use the copper sealer on the HG. I suppose it would still seal ok, but you never know..

hey, i did my hg at the exact same time you did, and i had a exact oil leak like you but on the driver side even b4 the hg job too. but yes, i did read around and i did find out from a lot of threads that ur suppose to use the copper spray sealer. but from what ur saying, i don't think its ur hg leaking (well not yet at least). im still pissed too cuz i still have a leak after all that work. but now that since erik has pointed out, i think its my oil pan gasket. but for you? im not really sure, since u said its leaking from above ur oil filter?

i have felpro head bolts. i've never heard of that problem, but then again, the more things ppl tell me the more i haven't heard of. although, it really doesn't look like my head gasket. i mean, there's oil back there, but that's also because i spilled oil while i was filling her back up. haha. it doesn't look like the oil flow starts to get heavy, well, not heavy but the most noticable, until it's at the last lip of the block right above the oil pan, i can't see up there enough because the damn axels and stuff are in my way. i don't know. i'm pissed and confused emoji

i just did a little searching... it looks like everyone with the "headbolt to long" problem had arp head bolts. a few ppl were talking about having to trim the bolt 1/16". it's the driver side rear head bolt that is too long. i don't know, i hate this...

well find out where the hell its comming from..... see if its comming from behind the underdrive pulley...there's a crankshaft seal behind that.....see if its comming from where the tranny and engine connect...there's also a seal in there..... ummm, if its comming from the block, check the two sensors back there....ones the oil pressure sensor, could be that.... if its either one of the first two....that sucks emoji
