#61280, "I want my power back! (A/F + Timing)"

Well to try and make this as short as possible, as I said in another post that I couldn't get the cam gears to line up when reinstalling my timing belt. I was able to get it pretty fucking close by adjusting them however. So far the best adjustments are 5 dgrees advance on the intake and 0 degrees on the exhaust (remember that this was the best I have come up with to try to get STOCK timing).

Symptoms: The car seems to "drag" when accelerating, like it should be in a lower gear. I noticed that I am running rich as fuck. I use to notice my A/F gauge on the green LED's only at WOT or very close to it. Now it's all the way on the greens even at half throttle. Things seem to get better at higher speeds but my low end is shit now. I also noticed that my gas milage is lower. emoji

Question: What is it about the timing that would make me run richer? I still think the exhaust is accurate but should I try to retard or advance the intake more?

I know this is kinda rough since the cam gears are fucked up, but thats the only thing I can do. Also if anyone could break it down on the relation of timing and A/F I would be grateful. TIA! emoji

What are you using to adjust your timing?

Retarded timing causes you to run richer. Why don't you line up your timing marks and adjust it accordingly?

No way they are going to line up??? If they don't line up when they are both a 0* then you need to redo you timing belt.

You need to tear it down and redo timing, or bring it to whoever set it wrong in the first place and get it right. If you have the cam gear set at 5 degrees advance, that's 10 degrees of crank rotation off.

What was done that the timing is so badly off, and who did it?

Tim is right. I tried this about 100 times. 2 fucking weeks and the same result each time and every different way. It's just not gonna happen. I've got to do it this way. I tink I'm gonna try to advance a little on the intake if retarding makes it run rich.

Heres my original post. http://forums.2gnt.com/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=5&topic_id=60552&mesg_id=60552&page=2

If anyone want to come over and prove me wrong, it's a case of beer for you. emoji Any kind you want. I just can't make this happen. emoji

Glad you guys are discussing this. Cuz I seem to have the same problem. I am running extremely rich as well, and have no power when I take off.
I have AEM cam gears the intake is 3 advanced and the exhaust is 3 retarted. I didn't ever think to check if the timing was on before adjusting the gears. How do you know that your gears are off 5degrees? I would like to check mine.

Would a new cam shaft cause you to run more rich since it has more durration thus essentially retarding and advancing both your intake and exhaust at the same time?

Please respond.

I also have been trying to fix my fuel ratio with my AFC controller, but not really successfull I am thinking maybe it is due to the timing error. I think I will just set them both back to zero and go from there.

Does anyone know a good setting for our motors?

thanks for the help, I know this was long.

I wouldn't retard the exhaust timing (it's just asking for hp loss).

What kind of new cam shaft are you talking about? OEM, no.

The timing can get done! How close were you getting it all the times you've tried?

Everytime I put the belt back on something would turn as soon as I put tension on it. Either the cam gears wouls line up and the crank be off or vise versa. Right now I think my intake cam turned one tooth and everything else was ok. I really don't know, but I can't do this shit anymore so I am working with the adjustments.
