I got an oil leak. I'm 3 1/2 hrs. from my garage, and since my car's lowered 2" I can't tell where the leak is coming from other than oil is dripping off my oil filter, and oil is around the back of the oil pan.

So, I pulled into a Skill Lube and asked them if I could go into their pit and look at the underside of my car, to see if I could spot the oil leak. Of course, their manager didn't let me and they had some noob mechanic tell me "it's all over the oil pan", duh.

I have 140k on my car, run full synthetic, and I don't believe it's ever been replaced.

Does anyone know if you can still get crankscrapers for $25 from one of those group buys?

I don't know about the scrapers, but I did have to replace my oil pan gasket. It was ooey-gooey to shit man.

Turned out most of the oil was coming from my headgasket back there too. Yet another .

Just get one at Autozone or whatever and use a shit load of RTV on it. We did that when we changed the gasket and when we went to tear the engine apart for the rebuild, the pan had to be pried of even with none of the bolts installed. RTV is the shit on that one imo.

Glad to hear that the lube shop had such a qualified professional on duty that day!

Why be an ass? I have a ~$600+ decision to make, that I didn't really want to get into but... I was wondering if an oil pan leak would drip off the oil filter, or if that's a leak from somewhere else on the backside of the engine. The head is rebuilt with an MLS headgasket, but the oil pan gasket has not been replaced. My new clutch is slipping like a bitch because it has some kind of fluid getting on it. Either A) Oil, which isn't coming from the rear main seal, since it's brand new and installed correctly, or B) The input shaft bearing seal, leaking tranmission fluid onto the clutch plate, causing it to slip like a bitch. I'm trying to be positive that it's a transmission leak causing the slippage and not an oil leak because I have no choice but to take it to the local dealership and have them replace the transmission (which is under a 3/36 warranty), (I can't drop the tranny myself since my garage is 3 1/2 hrs away). If it's oil getting onto the plate and not the tranmission then I get charged for the rediculous dealership's tranny drop price.

Oh and one more thing, I am just trying to confirm that an oil pan leak will drip oil off the oil filter.

I don't have the luxury of getting up under my car before I have to choose wiether or not to take it into the dealership.

There is a small portion of the oil pan that is mounted directly above the oil filter. You may have a leak just above the oil filter on the oil pan. Which can causing the oil to drip down to the filter and etc. Best bet is to buy a new gasket or go with the crankscraper.

If and oil pan leak occurs, and you are driving around, oil can potentially splash on the filter and accumulate on there.

Other possibilities:

You O-Ring on the crank angle sensor has took a dump, hence it leaks oil.

Head Gasket...Duh... since it was last thing that was worked on.

Valve cover gasket.

Oil filter drain block, the O-ring in there is gone.

Or if you are like Brian and I that has had the fortunate experience of a forgotten O-ring for oil pump outlet between bedplate and block, but in your case it is worn...

Double check, but I hope it is just the pan gasket.

-It's not enough oil to splash however.
-Is the crank angle sensor the sensor that's right above the oil filter?
- I know the head gasket is on there flawlessly (everything was machined, tolerances checked, new bolts), there was two mechanics watching to verify my work, and it's not the first time I've replaced the head gasket.
- The valve cover gasket is also brand new (sealant was used as well).

I'm pretty sure it's just the oil pan gasket, but if I'm wrong it's probably a $600+ mistake.

Does a crank scraper come with oil pan gaskets? (Wouldn't you need two, or would you just use sealant between the scraper and the bedplate?

Only need to use sealant between the scraper and the bedplate.
