hello im new to this site, i was reading some of the threads on the opinions of cams i have an rs eclipse and i have been looking into doing cams. Someone said that the #12 and the #16 would be the best to go with if i were to go with the #16 could i just buy the cams and put them in or would i have to but other parts for my valve train (i guess so my pistins dont hit the valves)?
By the way i was reading someone had an egr plate wouldnt the ecu through a trouble code for that? and does any one happen to know what type of ecu and 99 420A has
im not totally sure on the cams.....i think past the #12's they reccomend putting new springs and retainers in....i would think #16 would need them but i could be wrong....the reason you need the new springs and retainers is that there is a lot more stress from the cams pushing down on the valves so much farther....someone correct me if im wrong the egr block off does throw a light, but people have made their way around it...some have used a resistor, some have re-routed their pipes....do a search, you'll find a recent discussion on this i cant be of much help on the computer, i know the 95 had a completley different computer than the rest, but not sure what the 99 is or is called

SO for #16 i could buy the cams and the springs and retainers, there isnt any thing to worry about the valves hitting the pistins? because i am going NA and i am wanting to do large cams.
i really dont think youre going to have a problem with them hitting the pistons....they even make longer valves to open up more i believe...im no expert, but im pretty sure they're not going to hit the pistons

What other mods do you have? If you go with too large of a cam, and don't have enough flow to back it, it may do more harm than good. I've got the #14 cams which give it a rough idle and plenty of power. If you're going with the 16's, I'd recommend a CAI, bored or larger than stock TB, P&P upper & lower intake, ported head (intake & exhaust), tuned header and good exhaust. The only thing I don't have is head work, and I feel my cams may be too much.

The cams arent going to go in until this summer i am doing a bunch of stuff all at once but for right now i have CAI, 2 1/4 catback exhaust, test pipe (w/ o2 simulator), Port, polished, and milled head w/ 3angle valve job, motor mounts and then some other small stuff. But this summer when i put in the cams im getting a larger tb, porting my intake manifold (upper and lower), header, and a few other things. My motor will be flowuin pretty nicely so that isnt a concern of mine at all. I am basically just wondering what cams will go the best for my car with these mods PS. is the #14 cam for turbo cars or can you have them with non turbo thanks
Give a good read on the thread in the Advanced Tuning section, some good info for you. No they don't make longer valves, this would not let the valve close because the stem was too long (something a machine hop will check is valve stem height installed for proper alignment with the rockers.
#14's are for Turbos. Crower's Cams are NA grinds, and the specs listed on the website are wrong, they underate each stage (again info in the Advanced Tuning thread).
If you are looking big cams, be prepared to do some tuning. S-AFC, Cam gears, Injectors, etc...
As far as hiting the pistons, with a big cam and adjustamble cam gears it is possible... If you were to adjust too farout of spec. For how big a lift and duration you need to worry about this, I'm not sure. All the cams are made to be set in and work with stock pistons indexed to stock specs. Start changing those things and you shoudl start to concider it. But I suggest cams after you impreopved the cars ability to breathe.

alright thanks but like i said they will be going in this summer and when i put them in it will be opened pretty well (at least i think to) i have a S-afc already i just need to hook it up, i dotn know what type of ecu i have so i cant. I will look at the other threads.
its a combat front end with a custom front bow to it...the bow is actually an accident....when i pushed the two sides together to make it fit right, it pushed the middle up...so i put a brace under it to make the bow centered....i kinda like it that way now
