#60892, "Timing belt - 99 RS"

Hey guys.

I have a 1G TSi AWD that is rather modded so I am not a NoOb when it comes to DSM's. Please keep that in mind when you respond. With that said, I need some serious answers.

My brother has a 99 RS that is getting up in miles and will undoubtedly need a timing belt job done very soon. Being that he is not very mechanically inclined, I'll be doing the job for him. I have never worked on a 420A outside of bolting on an intake, headers, etc. so I am pretty clueless about this motor. My questions about the t-belt procedure are as follows..

1. Is the 420A an interference engine like the 4G63?
2. What should be replaced (other than the obvious t-belt, tesioner, pulleys)?
3. How time consuming is this? I can do a 1G DSM in about 2.5 hours so, how does this job measure up? A day? A weekend?
4. Are there any special tools needed? Pulley wrenches, etc.?

I have searched here and couldn't find definitive answers to my questions. I have also got on to DSMTalk and posted in their NT section. I figured I might as well ask you guys who have been there and done that.

Thanks in advance for your help..

I live in Fairfax, VA.. If you need some help, let me know.. I'd be happy to help.

2.5 hours is assuming I've had at least 3 beers and everything is going smoothly (no broken bolts, etc.). The t-belt on a 1g is really simple.

Thanks for the response.

I am currently changing my belt. I had everything off and ready to be put back on in a day. I used a normal pully puller and made a peice to go into the hole for the bolt, because the bolt isnt quite long enough. To get the side bolts out of the motor mount bracket... I took off the front and side motor mount and used a bar to push the engine to the side some, just enough room to get the bolts out. It is kinda challenging your first time. But nothing an amatuer couldnt do. (being as of 420a engine not 4g63)

if you are willing to help, just name a weekend that is good for you. i can buy you a case of b33r and stuff. we will probly have to make a few trips to the local sears for some tools. i have an autozone right down the street from my house too. i am busy on the 11th and the 25th. the other two weekends, i am just waiting for my schedule to fill up. let me know whats good for you. thanks mang!

EDIT: i just looked to see how far it is from fairfax to indy. it is about 9 hours give or take. are you sure you want to drive that far just to help me work on my car for a few hours? not to turn you off to the idea or anything, just a thought to consider.

1. Is the 420A an interference engine like the 4G63?

Yes.

2. What should be replaced (other than the obvious t-belt, tesioner, pulleys)?

That's pretty much it. Read the faqs for optional replacement items. PT valvetrain is nice.

3. How time consuming is this?

Very. The side motor mount goes *through* the timing belt. Unless you're pulling the whole motor, prepare to struggle with this for a few hours.

4. Are there any special tools needed?

No, same tools as 4g63.

Just keep in mind, when you get to That One Bolt The Always Hits The Unibody, pop the bolt out of the front motor mount, and jack the engine up a few inches. You can get it high enough to slide that bolt out between the power steering/AC hardlines on that side. That's the only real PITA part of it.

Timing belt, water pump, tensioner, tensioner pulley, idler pulley, cam seals (if there are any signs of leaking). That's a pretty complete list.

C'mon Dino...
Only replace the cam seals if they show signs of leaking?

They are only 6 bux or so for both. Cheap insurance.

I'm lazy. if they're not leaking, i wouldn't bother. i've had brand new seals leak, which has taught me to leave things well enough alone.

I just got done installing my timing belt for the SECOND time now I can do it with the engine in the the car and on the car haha. I'll tell you this it is a pain in the ass doing it on the car. your got bolts and stuff benging onto the side of the engine bay, the book has the engine really high don't know how they got it that high think they took the motor mounts then jacked it up on the pan with a block of wood..

The idler pulley is a real pain in the ass, I had to use a swivel head and a ratchet and use it like a wrench haha. It took me like an hour to get those motor mount bolts on the side of the engine also.

Then I tried to get smart by trying to do the timing belt without taking the ghey afx pulley off haha DOESN't WORK. but I figured out how to install that pulley really quick hehe.

Its taking me like 3 weeks to get the car done but I had the head rebuilt and stuff also. And if your going to do that its like doubling up the work haha cuz the head is one thing the timing belt is another emoji well even more work anyway cuz I'd imagine if you had to replace the headgasket you'd have to go through all I went through.

Since it's a 1999, I'm guessing it doesn't have that many miles on it. Has anyone EVER had a water pump go out on them? It's something I'd consider at the 120k service, but not 60k. emoji

But then it's only $40, might as well do it I guess.

at 70K, my water pump had worn out and was grinding the pump vanes into the housing. Replace it at 60K when you're supposed to - that is its scheduled maintenance interval.
