Well this just started about 2 days ago and I cant figure out what it is. When I start my car cold. I get get a pretty loud whining noise, almost sounds like a supercharger, coming from right around my cam sprockets. The sound goes away after warm up. stock cams and sprockets. Any ideas.

My timing belt/cam gear cover was rubbing up against the cam gears last year and it made a horrible noise. It would only do it when it was cold. If i pushed on the cover a little bit it would go away. I ended up just having to shim it over a little by sticking a piece of plastic between the cover and the motormount area.
Just a thought.

Thanks for the ideas guys. But that wasnt it. I tried moving the cover all around and it was still doing it. It does sound like something kinda rubbing and making a high pitched noise. Any other ideas guys.

Could be a tensioner pulley or an idler pulley under the cover starting to go bad. How many miles are on the motor?

its got 104k on it but i had the 60k service done at 80k. That sounds right though. I'm not sure if i had the tensioner changed when i did the service.

Having Problems? Heres my Three step solution to anything 2gnt related.
Step 1: Put down everything in your hands.
Step 2: Grab a lucky strike, Smoke it.
Step 3: Walk to the fridge, double fist some keystone ice, sit down in the shade, drink one beer, finish cigarette, drink other beer, roll a joint, smoke it, walk back to your problem, and in about 5 minutes the solution will come to you.
If not. Go here: here

If still nothing, your trying to hard. Start over at step 1.

I hope its not the water pump. I just had it replaced less the 25k ago. Did your water pump noise go away after the car warmed up.

hehe, but yeah, it started right after i did my 60k and my udp. the thing is i dont have a cover on my cam bears which could make them a lot louder i'm assuming? i did idler pulley, tensioner pulley, all the belts udp and that was it. i didn't do waterpump, cam seals or tensioner. i like the noise. it just sounds like metal pulleys clicking and whining. it sounds just like a turbo!

It sounds like your water pump.

I've read about similar symptoms occurring on other cars when their water pumps begin to fail as well. I'd get it changed ASAP. If it fails, it may lock up and cause your belt to jump teeth and create havoc with your valves.

Check the idler/tensioner pulley for your power steering/alternator. If you can wiggle it back and forth, the bearing is shot. There is a thread in the archives on how to replace the bearing. It lists a part number and source for it. Doing that saves quite a bit of cash compared to buying a new pulley from the dealer.
