Hey guys, About a month ago I had my car in the shop to replace the rear main seal (under extended warrenty). At that time I also had them replace the stock clutch with a CFDF (only brand the local auto parts store carried). I babied the car for about 1k miles to break in the clutch and the thing grabs hard.
Onto the problem...about 1.5-2 weeks ago the weather started to get cooler and I hear this terrible sound coming from the transaxle. Sounds like there is a chunk of metal being thrown around inside there on startup . The noise goes away when I engage the clutch, but sounds like ass until the car completely warms up. When its warm it runs/sounds like a champ.
I've searched the forums and it seems like it could either be the input shaft or the throwout bearing. If it is either of these problems, do you think it will be covered by the extended warrenty. I really dont want to have to shell out a couple hundred bucks to fix this damn thing. Please help!!

Heh, nevermind...seems like this is a common problem in the MTX section (I did a search for clutch chatter before I posted the original and only had 2 hits, thought it was a "rare" problem). Funny thing is, noone seems to know what the cause is or how to fix it.

that terrible sound you are hearing is your throw out bearing in your tranny. mine does it, my friends does it, my other friends does it... it's def. a comon noise once it starts to get cold out.

Yea, it does suck! Wonder why it doesn't do that with the stock clutch?? So long as theres not any damage being done I guess I can live with it though. Thanks for the input fellas.

It's NOT the T/O bearing. It's the input shaft bearing. The Neon versions must use a different bearing, b/c they do not have the problem. I have cracked many cases and they all have the same problem, but only in the 2gnt's. I have yet to see it in a Neon. It goes away with your clutch disengaged and when it warms up. The only thing that my buddy and I figured was that the bearing is not being lubricated properly under cold conditions.

The input shaft bearing on the clutch side is a metal sleeve, with the bearing side open to the trans fluid, and a rubber lip/spring seal on the outside. I don't see how it can make any noise. The case bearings are caged, sealed timkin roller bearings. If one of those is making noise, that's trouble, but unless you've run your trans dry, i doubt that will happen due to the way lubrication flows through the trans.

The "chatter" you hear when the motor is running, and in N, clutch out, is the throw out bearing wobbling on the release fork. I too thought it was the input shaft bearing, but after a new one in there, still does it. So I dulged into it. Jacked up the front end, set the ebrake, started up the motor, and pulled back the rubber dust boot on the trans around the release fork. Got a nice and bright light in there, and i could see the TOB wobbling back and forth, and the sound was corresponding with what i was seeing/hearing. Yeah its strange, never did that until i put in the ceramic clutch..I dont get it anymore than anyone else..
