Well, some of you may remember that my timing belt was "walking" towards the motor. I just took it apart tonight to check all the areas everyone said to check. I noticed that the tensioner pulley has quite a bit of "play" to it side to side and that the pulley sounds "dry" when I spin it. Is this normal? My main concern was that it seemed real sloppy on that bracket. The idler pulley wasn't loose at all and it spun freely....and I really don't think I had the UDP on too far. Do you think that this is my problem? I figured I'd check to see if anyone else noticed having some "play" in the tensioner pulley.....thanks for the help guys!

A very, very small amount of play is ok, any more than that, then get a new pulley. Also, the pulley should turn freely, but it should have just a bit of "drag" to it. If you can spin it, and it keeps spinnning by itself, then get a new one. Be sure to check your tensionr pulley bracket "arm", and if the bolt is ok.

Also when installing the timing belt tensioner. M<ake sure you have compressed the tensioner and insertted grenade pin, or allen wrench, whatever you use to hold the pin down. Don't install it by pushing it up from the bottom. Use a ratched or breaker bar on the tensioner pulley to put tension on the bent thenm hold the tener as far up as you can tightening it down. Then release the ratchet/breaker bar on the tensioner pulley, pull the grenade pin and your belt is tensioned.

Well, the bolt that holds the tensioner pulley on was a bit loose when we took it off. We tightened that bolt down and it took some of the play out of the pulley. Should I still replace that whole assembly(pulley/bracked)? Do you think it's possible that bolt came loose and caused that extra play in the tensioner pulley which then caused the belt to walk? I don't want to get stuck taking my car apart 3 diff. times to fix the same problem. Thanks for the SUPER quick responses guys....I appreciate it!

Yeah you can replace just the pulley part of the tensioner, it's the same pulley as the idler pulley.

If the pulley was wobbling the belt would ride funky and could cause tension and alignment problems.
