#6042, "Question on crazy ass Eclipse motor"

Wondering if anyone here has heard of the Cyclone motor for the 1st and 2nd gen Eclipse. I have heard different things about it. I heard that it has 276 HP and the only difference between the cyclone and a GST is it has the 1st gen head and something w/ the intake. I know a different head can add a lot but 276 stock sounds to good to be true. Other people said its 220-240 which is still decent. I want to put this motor in my 97 GS to add some power plus the turbo to my car, but I want to see what Im getting into and if this motor is all that. Feel free to IM me on my SN sokerpimp4 and check out my car on my clubs site in Maryland, www.hidden-images.com Pics will be up soon, its white. Thanks Also how do I put a picture of my car under what I posted? I tried but I doubt it worked

Its not that much horsepower.....its 220. Basically a 1g engine with a cyclose throttle body from what i know. Dont know if its true or not but someone told me you wont pass emissions. I was actually looking into getting one too ...heres a link to a site you can buy it from.

Thanks for the site, I have been to this site multiple times but it says the motor fits any Gen 1 Eclipse or Talon 89-94. From what I have been told the Cyclone motor for the Gen 2 Eclipses is better. For example older GS turbos and GSX's had under 200 HP but higher torque and the newer GST and GSX has 210 so Im thinking that the Cyclone would put out more on a newer Eclipse. A Gen 1 head should help some but Im not sure what advantages it would give the motor besides compression and what not.

Don't go all crazy for the JDM's. It may sound neat to all of your friends, but it's in name only. From what I understand, it's the exact same engine as the 1g's except it has a better flowing intake manifold. Nothing at all to do with the engines.

It's nice in the fact most are 6 bolt, IF you get the true JDM Cyclone (cyclone intake manifold, 16g turbo, 550 cc injectors etc.) Some people are advertising one's that are just normal 1g engines with a cyclone intake. (stock 14b, 450's etc.)
The cyclone intake manifold isn't really any higher flowing than a 1g, it just adds more low end. The cyclone intake has dual runners that have butterfly's, at the low end it closes one of the runners to restrict flow and at the top end opens it to get it's max flow.

Ok, i'm not the best with this stuff, but i've heard the 2g intake manifold was better flowing than the 1g. Couldn't you put either the 2g manifold or an Evo manifold to the 1g motor, and get about the same performance you would from the cyclone....well if you also added a 16g?

The 2g throttle body and intake manifold flows considerably less than the 1g. (in fact the whole 1g head flows more)
I think you may have been thinking about the 2g exhaust manifold, that flows better than the 1g.
Look here to see how much smaller the 2g is. http://www.vfaq.com/mods/1G-2G_intake.html
Another drawback to getting a true JDM Cyclone motor, it $1700.

Michelle, 1700 doesn't sound like a lot for a fairly new motor but people on this board ar trying to convince me to go w/ a turbo kit on my GS w/o doin any swap. I have been searching for info on Cyclone motor for a long time but cant find out how hard it is to drop in my car. If its a lot of work/$ then forget it, Id rather get turbo kit. THing is NO ONE knows much about Cyclone, most people I talk to think its a truck motor! IM me sometime sokerpimp4 THanks

What do you want to know about a cyclone. They are the exact same things as a first gen engine. I put one in my buddies TSi about a month ago so I know something. Truth is you will spend about as much as to run 12's in your car as you would to get a cyclone in and run flat 15's.

Will the 1G intake manifold bolt on to our 2Gs. If so is there much or any custom work we would have to do?

Dean.

The 1g intake manifold can bolt up to the 2g turbo engine but not the 420a. Most people either just use the throttle body and port the in on the intake manifold or go with a whole 1g head as it is difficult to port match the 1g intake mani. with the 2g head. Although 97+ are easier to do this to.

As for $1700 for a used engine is pretty much considering a 1g engine with 30,000 miles not to long ago went for $500 on ebay. (it had everything from the engine bay included)

Honestly I'll have to tell you to go with the turbo kit also, it is more cost effective, and you'll probably have more problems with the swapped in engine.
Like Evulflea said above, the cyclone engine is pretty much your everyday 1g engine with a few addons. The only reason the engine is called a Cyclone is because of the intake, the rest of the engine is the same.
All that to run flat 15's isn't worth it in my book, when I could put that money into a turbo kit and not have to deal with an engine swap and run better times.

Sorry, but the turbo kit is more practical, unless you are up for the challenge of a lifetime and a lot of hard work.

So, the best thing we can do is swap the 2g tb we have for a 1g tb, and have the intake manifold ported to fit it, and go ahead and port the rest of the intake manifold? Or now worry about swapping and just have ours bored to 55mm?

Yes $1700 sounds like a bargain, but do not forget to get a price on the transmission, ecu, wiring harness, sensors, etc etc. It can be done, but it is not as cheap as it sounds unless you can find a wrecked donor car that has everything in it in good working order. I would really not be too concerned with getting a JDM motor either since you can pick up an American spec 4G63 for cheaper if you look around hard enough anyway.

THat 1700-1900 price does include trans, wiring harness, mounts, axles but might not include a new ECU though and its a real JDM motor which is why Im looking into getting the motor after getting those prices, but it seems you guys have convinced me its a 15 sec motor just like the GST which aint worth it. I figured having this motor would be totally different since no one around here has heard of it except a few people who said its capable of 276 HP tops which got my attension. Im trying to make the car more of a sleeper like w/ a stock motor (mid-high 14's if those specs on motor I got were right), upgrade the stock turbo w/ the kit turbonetics has(low 14's), and add a front mount intercooler for performance and show to get into the 13's. Id rather have a 13 sec car w/o gauges and a stock turbo then have some crazy Stage 4 turbo that could have a lot of problems and would involve building the engine a lot. Thanks, man I write a lot.

The 276hp people are thinking of is the 4G63 in a EVO which also has a FMIC and 16G stock. The cyclone engine is not that. Oh, it is actually well known of as well emoji
